No one is doing Magna-Porting of firearms in Canada since Joe died a few years ago. Brakes reduce recoil considerably more than porting.

The BAR is actually quite light on recoil, way more so than a bolt action, especially if you have added 8 ounces of mercury... try adding a Decelerator recoil pad and then live with it...

Do you actually ever use the iron sights? A brake on it would reduce more recoil than any other option. Do you actually need a .338 Mag?

Your right muzzle breaks are ugly and horribly noisy and unless your hunting Grizzly or Bison there is no point in a .338 hell you don't even need a .338 for grizzly, sell it and buy a rifle you can handle with your injuries.

Everett: By your posts i see, you hunt and live in southeastern BC. I have made several trips to the North Peace. Large predatory bears are the rule, they attend any kill sometimes while you are elbow deep. While i was not specifically looking for a 338 ( was looking for a 300), this one came available. Despite a long history of shooting Weatherby and Rem ultra Mags, i find this particular gun...excessive.

In dealing with my injuries, i choose to not let them interfere any more than possible with how i live. I dont think lessening the recoil is giving in to pain, selling the rifle is.

I have several Magna-ported rifles and I can attest to the fact that it does not reduce recoil, it reduces muzzle lift thereby reducing perceived recoil, but if your issue is pain from recoil, I doubt Magna-porting would help you much. You can reduce your bullet weight to say a Barnes 180 gn X bullet and load it moderately and it should help immensely and still do what you need it to do on the muzzle end of things. If that isn't the answer for you then a good recoil pad and a brake are your only real options left I think.

You might try a stock that puts the barrel and action more in line with your shoulder. The BAR's is quite high and perceived recoil is more in spite of semi auto action.
Maybe add some weight as well.

If Yogi comes for your kill while you're gutting it, a .338 anything won't help. However, looks don't matter when it comes to a rifle that hurts to shoot. Put a brake on. I'd be thinking lighter bullet too. Physics being physics.

Sunray..........I see you still have your head up your a$$, a 338 for an intruding grizzly is a helluva lot better than a sharp stick..........JEEEEZZZZZE

My guess one of the reasons the .338 has become so popular is because of a possible big bear encounter... not because it is needed for 'game'.

i have an 8 mag that is magna ported. because it keeps the muzzel down it seems to lessen the recoil but not like a brake. i would prefer magna port to that of a brake. a good recoil pad and a little weight in the butt would help.

i had a rem 7600 magna ported by a fella in Winnipeg area, but that was years ago... had these see-through high mounts for my scope and dang gun would pop me in the eye when i shot it, but after magnaporting ...it was really tame !! but a touch louder ( who cares bout that part ) at first i thought it was a gimmick but by jeez, i was a believer after getting it done .. not sure about the recoil though as 3006 doesn't have much kick to begin with

can't find anything bout that smith... ofcourse, i had the work done about 20 years ago

Sell it and buy a Barrett M99! The recoil should be a lot less, you're delivering way more energy, and it's a lot of fun to shoot. This way, you're not giving into your pain, you're showing your pain who is boss.

Try contacting Wanstalls. Their recent promo Remington 870 shotgun has a ported barrel. Maybe they can link you up with the gunsmith who did it.
