yes, i know you can remove all scopes. lol. i'm wondering about the kind you see in movies, on the take down sniper rifles and such. the ones where the person releases a quick release catch and slides the scope and mount off, allowing use of iron sights or take down of the rifle. is this hollywood fiction, or do they actually make something like this? i think it would be a great idea for a project i have in mind.

and a side question. once i have my scope sighted in, if i were to remove the scope still in the the rings, from the base and put it back on in the same place, would i need to re-sight in my scope?

Most companies that make scope rings make QD (quick detach) mounts for scopes. La Rue makes ones for basically everything, but they're expensive as hell. Leupold has simpler and much cheaper ones.

I read a book on Bear Attacks that belonged to my grandfather (sadly the book was destroyed in a fire) but the book talked about how the author was out hunting and had a rifle that allowed the scope to not come off but instead just pops off to the side for using the iron sights. It came in handy when the author was attacked by a grizzly which was so close the author actually had blood splatters on his clothes from shooting the bear.

Part of this depends on your degree of required precision after re-mounting. If a 1 moa change in point of impact is acceptable, its fairly do-able. If you expect more repeat precision than that, you may be dealing with some pretty fine tolerances. I've used the Leupold QRW rings and they will return to zero the the point that they are good for hunting, but probably not for sniper work. I'd imagine the individual install must matter. Imagine if the rings put some stress or tension on the scope tube while in place because of machine tolerance or misalignment. What happens to the scope when its relieved of that tension and then re-installed? Might be some fine tuning and lapping of the rings required along with high quality optics

thanks for the info guys. :) drache, i just finished a Robert Ludlum nocel (The Arctic Event) where one character had the exact system you speak of on her rifle. sounds like a pretty good idea.
