it won't come off from the reversed position.

I tried hammering it, wrenching it, Heating it up a bit, then hammering it and wrenching it, harsh language... etc. And yes I am depressing the catch.

Any other ideas?

I've got the same problem with mine. I depressed the spring loaded catch and it moved 1/4" and is now stuck. I will try some penetrating oil tonight before putting a wrench on it.

A large flat based screwdriver or wood chisel used to pry between the bayonet lug and the bayonet it will come right off.No need to beat it.

...or...

Just use a "Rat Tail" file or Dremel, and take of just enough material/finish on the inside of the bayonet attaching point to permit easy installation and removal of bayonet. :)

Thanks for the tips.

It is really stuck on there... but the rifle is up for sale anyhow (not because of the bayo) and I will let the next guy deal with it...

For further information to those who Do intend to take theirs off:

Mosin bayonets were not designed to be taken off by soldiers in the field. Most of them need a couple solid hits with a block of wood and a big mallet to dislodge it off the muzzle, regardless if pointing inward or outward. If you choose to readily remove it for whatever reasons may be, just wrap a round dowel with a bit of sandpaper and work it inside the bayonet portion. All guys know the motion. It shouldn't take more than a minute or two before it attaches/detaches with slight effort. Don't over-ream it or it will flop about.

Make sure that it isn't binding on the front sight post before you ream out the body. I had to relieve the channel for the sight on mine more than it needed an over all Sand Job.
