Guys,

Usually something like this is a piece of cake - taking a forend off an 870 is not too hard. But I just got an older Wingmaster 870 and this thing will. not. come. off.

I've tried soaking it in liquid wrench penetrator, I've used a strap wrench combined with a forend tool in vice grips and it just isn't working. I suspect there's some massive corrosion in the threads, or some sadistic ####### used locktite in there or something?

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks
John

Impact gun?

Soft jaw pads holding tube in a vice, foreend tool fitted into a suitable sized socket attached to an impact gun?

A heat gun to weaken loctite might help but you run the risk of ruining the foreend stock, but I don't think you care too much.

Pump the action open and leave it there. Hold the action in padded jaws in a vise.

Apply heat to the nut with a propane torch... quite hot - but not to change the color of the bluing... and try it again.

If that doesn't do it, apply even more heat and repeat until it breaks loose.

Ooooops...

My above solution is for the barrel nut on the mag tube...

I just re read this thread...

Needle nose pliers will only work if the nut is not tight... you need a proper tool for the job.

For the nut in the wood forend (hard to heat it but it can be done) you should let some penetrating oil work in over night at least... and then with the wood held firmly and a proper fitting nut wrench try it... I have seen some where the metal twisted in the wood... then try and hold the rear metal in wood blocks in the vise. Worst case scenario is the wood is ruined and the metal twisted and it all needs replacing..

All good suggestions. I have the forend off the gun, it's just the nut I can't remove. I'm going to soak it completely in liquid wrench for the whole weekend then try the whack/impact wrench and torch methods progressively... I'll post an update with results.

Cheers

The whack method would be my last resort...

Heavy gentle torque will give a warning if something slips and the wood starts to crack.

Whack give no warning - something breaks or it breaks loose.

Do you know the difference between a lousy golfer and a lousy parachutist?

The lousy golfer goes Whack - fu*k.

The lousy parachutist goes FU*K - Whack.

I use a 14mm socket (Mastercraft) with two points machined on the face of the socket. Allows use of a longer breaker bar. I had an old 870 with the nut stuck on. One guy held the forend turning one way, the guy with the wrench turned the other, eventually broke loose. Good luck.

I stink of failure! Nothing has worked so far. I don't want to try the torch just yet, because this will mean burning the wood.

@ Repete: no I don't have the special armourer's tool... just the steel T-shaped tool. I'm going to order the wrench from Brownells and give that a try... this damned 870 project is getting expensive.

Thanks for all the replies guys

Cheers

Throw it in the freezer....maybe the parts will contract at different rates?
Maybe hit it with a focused heat gun when it comes out of the deep freeze if it's still seized?

Try some KROWN penetrating oil.
I had some ruger parts my buddy could not get apart - soaked in KROWN for a while and apart they came........
