the lefty side of the safety on some 1911's is removed with a thin blade tool, it just slides straight off then the normal side is removed in the usual way,don't know for sure about springfields though
put the safety halfway on, then pull the right side off first
will take a bit of force sometimes though, and sometimes its easier after taking the grip panel off, gives you more leverage
To remove the ambi safety on a 1911 first remove the right side safety. you will probably need to insert something under the safety and gently pry up on it. Use something that will not mark or damage your finish. after removing the right side the left side can be removed BUT it can only be removed when the hammer is at full #### and safety mostly on. So make sure the hammer is fully cocked, safety in the on position then wiggle the left side while pulling it up and it should come out. Instalation is the reverse not hard but kind tricky
