Removing barrel lug on Savage MkII ?

Has anyone removed the round under-barrel lug that is on the MKII barrel (mine is the model G).

I was thinking of this to see how it affects accuracy and to free float the barrel properly.

Any comments or results?

It just seems like an odd addition to the barrel doesn't it? I am wondering how it can aide in accuracy?

Perhaps I'll just remove it and test....I assume it can be removed, i haven't taken the stock off since I bought it a few months ago.

I'm assuming that it would be pretty easy to remove if it is like mine. I have a Mk II bv pre accutrigger but it only has a dovetail for the lug, it was never installed. If it is just a dovetail with a set screw, loosen the screw and drife her out. I don't think it should really make a huge difference though...
