I just got a lone wolf .40S&W barrel with the Black Oxide finish. Its started to wear, and I would like to remove the finish and have the stainless barrel.
What products can I use to remove this? id prefer something chemical to reduce the manual labour involved.

any ideas?

Chris

Acid.

Edit:

Any acid...
- Hydrochloric (aka muriatic acid) (used to clean masonry, etc)
- Sulfuric Acid (aka battery acid)

but be careful, the acid will dissolve the Iron (III) Oxide (Black Iron Oxide) and will start to react with your barrel to make Iron (II) Oxide (red rust).

Work in small areas, and wear gloves, but acids aren't as bad to work with as movies depict them to be, just like guns aren't actually as dangerous as movies depict them to be :p

Muriatic

I just used muriatic acid mixed 4 water to 1 acid to strip the black oxide from a shotgun. Just dipped it for a few minutes in a tray of the stuff (plug the bore). The warning about rust is dead on, rinse it and then move directly to your recoating or refinishing process as it will rust as soon as it dries (I went straight into a parkerizing tank. Good luck.

awesome guys, thanks for the quick replies

im looking for just a stainless finish after dipping in the acid i guess...what kind of finish should i dip the barrel into to get these results? and can this be done easily by me?

or should i just send it away to a gunsmith to take care of?

Forget all the acids ect. to remove the finish, they're a waste of time and the end product sucks. Get someone to blast it with glass beads or better yet aluminum oxide which will prep. it for Gun-Kote.

I take it your barrel is stainless?
Blasting it with aluminum oxide will give you a dull matte like finish. However it marks very easily leaving a shiny spot.
This is what stainless looks like after blasting.
