The sling and tool pouch that came with my new M91/30 came in contact with a well cosmoline'd oil bottle. I'd like some advice on cleaning it up without damaging the canvas too much.

I was about to clean them the old fashion way (soap/hot water) But my wife mentionned that heating oily substances on cloth tends to embed them deeper into the fabric which would be bad.

She suggested freezing and then delicatly brushing with a fine brush until clean. I doubted her method (never do that!!!) And she replied go ask your online buddies. And here I am :)

Found this from a little google searching:

Boil them for a few minutes in water. DO NOT use your Mom's/wife's/GF's pots!!!! (Trust me, been there!)

Cosmoline liquifies at a lower temp than the 212 degrees of boiling water, so most should rise up off the gear. Just about five minutes is fine.

After, use a good degreaser like Purple Power, Fantastic, etc and clean and scrub. On the leather, when it dries use a leather oil.

lil bit o cosmoline wont kill nobody, it gets in your veins after a bit just part of collecting in the milsurp field.

take some paper towel and lay it under the cosmo side of the sling and use a hair dryer to heat the sling and the oil will go into the paper towel.
