I have a Russian SKS45 but I can't get the firing pin out of the bolt block to clean it? I have placed the block in my vice with some soft jaws and used a brass drift to try and free up the pin but couldn't get it out.

don't use a vise friend. Get a block of wood with a hole that the cross pin can be drifted into. with the block on a sturdy table lay the bolt on it's side with the larger end of the cross pin centered on the hole in the block and drift the pin straight down. It'll be a stiff hit to get it moving. {the block should be thick enough that most or all the pin will fit into before bottoming out on the table}
Hope this helps, and I hope my explaination is clear enough.

BTW....you don't have to bother w a brass drift, steel is fine you won't hurt it....say 1/8"

I would get yourself a brass punch my self. Why beat up your rifle. Remember Utube is your friend. ;) http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=sks+firing+pin+disassembly&oq=sks+firing+pin+disassembly&aq=f&aqi=g1&aql=&gs_sm=s&gs_upl=5133l13463l0l15943l17l17l0l1l0l0l577l3367l0.1.6.2.1.1l11l0

Forget the wood block.

I use a 1/2" drive impact socket as a base. Ben Murray of Murray's Guns (the guy who makes the anti-slam fire firing pin), says to use a firm base. I tried a steel punch and a 16oz hammer and I could not get that cross pin to move when I was using wood (also tried using a 6lbs sledge with someone holding the punch--same results). One quick blow with a 16oz hammer and the bolt sitting on top of the socket. She moved 1/4" with the first hit and some light tapping got her out after.

a vice with soft jaws is just fine, as is anything sturdy. Some just take a little more force than others. Remember a bigger hammer works better than swinging harder. Steel punches are best, the parts are hardened so you wont hurt anything

Once you get it out the first time it should get a little easier. I can place mine over two erasers set 1" apart and a few taps with the 8oz mini hammer I keep in my range box will free her up.

Maybe give it a soak in some penatrating oil for a few minutes if you're still having trouble.

I will tear into it again today. I am used to the retaining pin in AR's which rotate and basically fall out. I was really surprised how stiff it was in the bolt. I tried the hammer but I will try a steel drift in place of the brass I was using.

Well here, if you can't get it to go with the hammer...I made a drawing for you. You can bow to my microsoft paint skills when you're done thanking me.

You'll probably need to hold the back end of your punch in place as you tighten to keep it from slipping depending on its size and whether the finish is rounded or machined flat. I can't see how this wouldn't work for you.

I broke my punch trying to get mine out. Instead I soaked mine in mineral spirits over night. Boiled it in water, shook it vigorously. Made sure the firing pin was free-moving.

For what it's worth, I'm pretty sure mine isn't coming out. Not sure why.

Not to be a jerk, but are you tapping the pin out from the proper side?

I've owned 2 SKS' and haven't had any problems getting the firing pin retaining pin out by placing the bolt over a 2x4 that I've drilled a hole into and tapping the pin out with a brass punch and a small hammer.

i tried plenty to get the pin out of mine, but that bastard is in for good. i'm sure i'll try again soon, but until then i boiled the hell out of it - hoping the water got all in and where it needed to go. seemed to be moving right

There is a broader side to the firing pin retainers.. you have to make sure you punch them out from the smaller diameter side.
Both pins on my two old Russians come out easy:confused:
