just wanted to ask for those of you that have removed the front sight of a sks and threaded the barrel and installed a muzzle brake could you post a photo and how was the removal..thinking of a later project as my tapco stock is installed and I have no use for the front sight thought of removing it and threading the end to install a brake ,

Punch the 2 pins out, the bayo sleeve will sometimes come off easy, sometimes they are very difficult & we need to use our puller tool.

I don't use the front sight and its kinda ugly...lol
I'm off today so may take alook at it ..even if I do get it off still not sure what to do with it.
how much can be cut off barrel without making it prohibited or anything

I'm on the fence now..may just buy new one from high cal and get them to install one for me , save me the trouble .....mmmm...on the fence
 
Once you got the 2 pins out of the front sight assembly, i just stood the barrel on end (over a wood board) and beat on the bayo lug with a hammer, propane torching the front sight assembly should in theory make the assembly come off easier, so i tried that. Got the front sight assembly off, slowly, not sure if the torching helped or not.

I personally wanted to keep the long barrel on my SKS, but did want to remove the bayo lug; so i cut the sleeve section off just behind the front sight with a hack saw. and then slid the front sight back into the original position. This gives the gun a very clean look, but does leave a pin slot in the barrel that use to be where the bayo lug was exposed. I was worried this may compromise the structure of the barrel for it is a rather deep slot. I test shot the gun anyways this weekend with only 15rnds, and so far have had no problems :) need to shoot a 100 more rounds through it before i'll feel comfortable.

Ive been running a short NCstar brake that I bought from Hical on this gun for years with great results, but decided I wanted something threaded. So i sent the barrel and receiver off to Hical.ca to get it threaded for a 14x1mm LH AK 74 brake.

I too had a ncstar brake from hical but the pin broke off after a couple of shots and haven't reinstalled it since..over a year now.
ive sent an email to hical to inquire on new rifle with the work done to see if my wallet will allow it..lol
I'd love to just get an AR15 but price of ammo makes the difference .

I just got mine off by doing to same as you. I my case heating it up was necessary because without heat it wasn't moving. I would like to have the barrel threaded so I could put the AK slant brake on also so I'm thinking of the Trueshot conversion. Is it easier to install than removing the stock sight Hical?
 
The trueshot front sight just slips on & bolt down with 3 set screws, we include red locktite as well, It also comes with a sight tool. use the AK threads to put on any AK brake you want, we stock lots of brake options, HERE.

just don't want to ship my rifle and wait....
next month or so I'll finally come up and decide ...but will still look at options and see.
the true shot model does it come without front sight as I have the tapco stock and looking at the utg for end to install for front back up sights
 
It's easy to thread the SKS barrel for any muzzle brake. It's a 14 x 1 thread either left or right. The metal is not too hard and easy to cut if you have the proper die. I've threaded a few of my SKS's PM me if you live close by.
 
whats the point of that now your bayonet won't fold out? I don't understand why people put a muzzle brake or flash hider on a rifle with a bayonet like a sks or m44? Unless you remove the bayonet perminately.
