Removing Gas Block Screw on AG-42 Ljungman

I'm considering modifying the gas system on my Ljungman. When I examined the screw on top of the gas block it looks a) quite mangled from someone else's previous attempt & b) staked.

Any tips on getting that little guy out? Anyone have first hand experience modifying their gas system with a new screw?
 
There is a sticky at the top of milsurps forum for AG42, have a look thru it. I don't remember what all is in there , but it will be informative. Try your google fu, there are other sources of info for that rifle also. I recall reading somewhere the threads on the screw are a really tough to find size / pitch, but it is possible to find by searching diligently ( at least it was a couple years ago). I've found the appropriately sized replacement screw to use as a gas adjustment, but the more I look at how mangled the original is, the more I think I will be drilling it out. Will probably want to find an original replacement before I do something that drastic though.
 
Any images of your issue? Lots of info and expertise on here to offer suggestions to get it out with the least risk. It would be easier to see what you are dealing with. I've had the same modification on my project list due to picking up brass our of the woods 30ft away on my last range visit with the AG. My other 6.5x55 rifles don't appreciate the AG much lol.
 
I've gotten a few out, but only one that could be used again, and it was ugly. As mentioned they were peened into place, on a thin head. I use an impact driver with a bit I shaped to ft (thinned the blade of a slot driver).

I still have taps and dies (chineseium) here somewhere for the original thread. There are some folks that tap the hole to something a little easier to source, but I never went that far.
 
I have done the mod on mine and it works great, well worth the effort. If you can't find the thread pitch for the screw you need locally there is always the option of re tapping it to something readily available. Imho

Sorry, been away for a bit. I could get a photo, but basically I can tell the screw head got pretty mangled by someone's previous attempt to remove it. It looks like they also took a file to the screw slot to even it out and maybe increase its depth. But as it is right now it just seems too shallow for a screw driver to get a good grip on, and it can't be filed any deeper.

As far as I can tell, if I want it out, I will be drilling into the screw and using a broken screw extractor to hopefully torque it out. This seems pretty drastic, and I'd like to get a original replacement screw, and gas system mod screw before I take this step.
 
I bought an "impact screwdriver" a few years back for just this type of thing. I used it mainly on a motorcycle engine that had all the screw heads stripped off. Worked pretty slick and I got all the screw out. I think mine was from Princes Auto. This might work as you wack it with a hammer and it drives into and torques out the screw at the same time. I don't remember if the kit would have a bit small enough though however they could be ground down.
