How do you guys remove the lettering from the slides of your norinco 1911's? I have purchased a norc 1911 I want to remove the fugly lettering from the slide. Would love to have your advice.

Talk to Gunnar at Armco, he posted pictures of a Norinco that he did this to.

Heres some pics from his website of it.

Weld over, resurface. Dress down entire surface until markings are gone. Change slide.
Welding would involve intense localized heat, I cannot say if this could cause problems. If the markings aren't too deep dressing down the entire surface is an option. Swapping slides would be easiest. The retired Norinco slide would have some resale value.

The lettering is not more than about .004-.006" deep. Just bring it to a machine shop, and have them use a surfacing milling. Tell them to use a lot of cutting fluid so it will keep the slide cool while it is being cut.

Draw filing would work. So would a surface grinder. Or a belt sander. Finish with abrasive paper on a sheet of glass. The trick would be to keep the surace flat and true. It would be necessary to refinish, of course.

We are talking norinco here.. It's probably not flat to start with!

But it will look better when its finished if the surface is true. Dips and hollows won't help appearance. Of course if its blasted and parked irregularities tend to fade.

My brother removed all the machining marks off his Norc slide with 600 grit emery. Looks great in the white and then polished. lettering is of course still visiable. Good steel in frame , slide and barrel, just needs lots of stoning in ceratin areas. Smaller parts are useable , but, like all 1911s should be replaced with aftermarket pieces.

Question.
Why is the lettering so objectionable?
Would you do the same if it was Singer or North Ameician Arms?

A gun with no marking has no character, literally.

Good one. Why buy a Norc if you want to remove the lettering? Buy another pistol that you're not ashamed off. I'm generalising here. :D
