What’s the best way to remove a live primer from a factory cartridge?

Without firing it. :) Or removing the bullit:)

No, I don’t want to pull the bullit.

I just want to remove the primer only, from the live round.

Forget it....

The chance of a primer kicking off depriming an empty case vs the chance of a primer kicking off trying to pry it out of a live round.

Worst case with no powder or bullet (bang, bit of smoke, some pressure). Worst case with the live round, well..... could be significant.

Not something I would suggest you try.

If you really have to do/try this then I would probably try it with a small, very sharp drill bit,
drill off center of the primer on very low speed to prevent metal from heating up. once a small hole has been accomplished squirt some wd40 or thin oil
in there and let it soak. then enlarge hole so you can get in there with a small prying tool to pry out the primer.

Clamp the round in a vise and don't hold it in your hand :)

Don't forget your eye and ear protection lol.
Perhaps you can make a clear plastic "blast shield" that in case things go wrong shrapnel goes the other way :p

Let us know how it went haha.

Well I’m not gonna try it... unless someone like eagle eye or Ganderite , says it can be done, safely.

The only way to get the primer out without pulling the bullet and dumping the powder would be to pry it out, or clamp onto it somehow. With a case full of powder and a bullet holding it there. How THE ##### could this be done safely? Lol lee provides a blast shield for seating primers when doing it the correct way, and that's without a small bomb in front of you.

Ok boys, don’t get excited, I’m just asking a question. Out of curiosity , I’m not gonna do it:)

But, what if one were to drill a small hole in the case, and dump the powder.
Then drill a small hole in the primer, insert a small screw and pluck the primer out?

lol

I know of a cartridge collector who tried that and got a mangled hand as a result.

Scrap that one then:)

So the only way possible to get a deactivated factory round, would be to ,
Pull the bullit,
Remove the primer with a decapping die
Dump powder
Reseat bullit.

Sound about right?

Why not back to pulling the bullet and re-seating it after primer and powder are out?
That way the case does not have an ugly hole in the side.
