Hi,

How do you remove the top metal handguard (the metal part that covers the barrel on the front) on the m-305 (m-14)?

I'm putting in a new stock and I want to remove this part to paint it black

Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks.

It's held on by a little clip near the action. You should be able to pop it off with a screw driver, and minimal effort.

Hungry here: For the most part, this method will work. When you are dealing with a collector grade (read: all original, never issued Springfield Armory M1) walnut handguard, disaster is more likely to strike. You can get away with a screw driver (I know I did, once anyways) but the wire method and the $ 24.95 M1/M14 handguard pliers are guaranteed not to bubba the woodwork. LOL

Without the proper tool you can mark up your handguard easily.

I use a thin piece of wire, like picture frame wire.
Loop it through one of the holes in the "hand guard clip", pull down, out and then up. This way is almost as clean as the handguard pliers.

If the clip and guard are still on the rifle.....just loop the wire through the hole, pull out and then up once clip is clear of the barrel notch.

To install again.....hook one side on the guard, stretch clip and pull out and down.

Just don't be a fzcking idiot like me and buy a pair of M14 / M1 handguard clip pliers like I did for $ 24.95 USD plus shipping from Numrich.

I used the GGFB method for many years with great success. Before I hosted M14 clinics, I bought a pair and thought, "Why the fzck didn't I buy these long ago?"

The best method is still the wire method, it's the cheapest and most welfare way, and that is consistent with my preachings on the Clinic DVD or CD set(s).
