Removing M14 flash hider

Got it! Just got a bigger punch, bigger hammer, better vise and a buddy to help. I cracked the flash hider but whatever. Thanks for all the advice everyone, it helped to know I was going in the right direction.

Now I need some touch up paint. What is the best type and where can I find it in a matching gun metal grey? I'm thinking BBQ paint in a spray can but I don't know if Crappy Tire sells it in that grey.

Fixed it for ya :) Glad to hear you got it off finally.Check out the Springfield Armory muzzle brakes that Brownells sells.They are a direct replacement for the original flashider.....there is one for sale on the EE as well

Haha. I'm not going to lie, hitting part of my barrel that hard made me nervous.

Do you think mine is cooked or is it still okay?

If it's going to make it less accurate I will replace it as the whole point of this was to shim the gas cylinder and make it more accurate. It didn't even need the $15 shims the shoulder just needed to be flipped.

ETA: Wow that Springfield flash hider isn't cheap! If mine is too mangled to use I might just leave the muzzle naked and call it a carbine. I have a scope so the iron sights aren't too essential.

Repark it youself!

Buy some or make up some parkerizing solution (recipes available or look up radocy--i think thats the name) mix with water and buy a cheap used stainless steel pot.
Clean and rinse flash hider with household ammonia then rinse with water.
Place pot on bbq outside and heat to 160-180 degrees.
Drop flash hider in park solution and wait 20-30 minutes.
Remove with tongs and rinse with water .
Oil like crazy and you will be inpressed as i am when i do it...
 
to meet the NON-REMOVEABLE criterea- if it's WELDED, it's non- removable- and that's how it's worded- if it's not welded, you could remove it with an allen key and a set of castle nut pliers- you're NOT SUPPOSED to be able to remove or crack the welds

Hummm! I thought that only applied to 5-20 mags. Can you elaborate a bit on that. Is it illegal or something to remove it? I dont think most guys that remove them bother re-welding the replacement FH on?????

to comply with U.S. import regulations, the flashiders were welded, the auto bits removed, the bayonet lugs were ground off, and the scope mounts were ground so as to make them unusable- i have one of these and you can clearly see the grinder marks- however,b-square ( the old mount) makes a mount wich compensates for the 15 degree angle from vertical provided you don't do up the main screw all the way and use the set screws to compensate- the reason that all that persists until this day is once the chinese were set up, it was VERY DIFFICULT to change it- first we got the proper non angled scope mount hole, then the bayonet lug, and now we have the m14 the way it SHOULD be- with the exception of the f/a bits- once either bush sr or clinton prohibited the sales of m14s rifles into that country( and that's a fault of my memory- i can't remember which one) the communist chinese were left with a rifle and tooling with no market save canada and new zealand- so the first ones we got were the us "rejects" as they were already made up

you're misinterpeting what can-am is saying; while it IS important , the chinese don't give a you know what about the us as far as their guns are concerned and are considering the us as a LOST CAUSE; so what they're doing is BUILDING their rifles to suit OUR laws, not KALIFORNIA'S or us- that's why they will cease welding on the flashider shortly- chinese production lines move very slowly indeed as far as mods go, and i should imagine this is more of an elimination of a step in the production rather than a modification-
you see, when the chinese set up production for anything, they get it ETCHED IN STONE , and still have all the steps that the US SPECIFIED in place
therefore the production line is still the same as it was back in the 80's- however , we've also seen a VERY slow evolution- first, they hardened the bolts due to poor reviews back in the 90's when the americans could still get them- then , they made SOLID but fluted flash hiders, b/c some fool stateside ( probably kalifornia) said so, then when bush/clinton imposed the embargo, the chinese finally said" you know what" and considered the usclosed- but that left the problem of what to do with all the rifles that were left "in the system"- that's why we have various moded norincos /polys in canada- it's only now we're starting to see the original non-moded m14s as they were reverse engineered in the first place

Hey Roddy...

What size punch did you use? Did you do this on a shorty or a full sized barrel? I have a shorty I plan on doing it on... does anyone have any tips?
