Removing M14 Stock Ferule?

I am making an M14 stock and would like to remove the metal stock ferule (it is a part of the metal barrel band). How does one remove it? What affect, if any, will it have the rifle in terms of accuracy if I do so? I want to tension bed the barrel and gas cylinder together with aluminum. Thanks for any help and photos are always appreciated.

Are you talking about the ferule, or the op-rod guide? Either way you'll need to remove the gas system.....pretty easy, ferule slides off (or if unitized, stays attached to the gas assembly). If its the op-rod guide, just knock out the roll pin and tap it off the barrel.

Here is a photo of the stock ferule that bands around the barrel. I don't see how this ferule would come off without taking everything off the front end, gas cylinder + gas cylinder lock + flash hider if it has to slide off the end. Is that correct?

Absolutely, nothing worse than not being able to follow the subject at hand.

Then there are the systems that mount the receiver more solidly to the stock, with more rigidity. The JAE design uses threaded screws to provide consistently repeatable receiver/stock tension.

I also planned to mount the receiver to the stock in2 or more areas. But, does the AKM, for example, require that the stock ferule be removed for assembly?

Personally, I am experimenting with “free floating” the M14 barrel, using a modification of the AKM design [ bottom tensioning with screws and spacers to a rigid aluminum channel ]. Further testing is required, but since both the AKM and the JAE are known for decent accuracy, I expect good results.[/COLOR][/B][/B]

Go to any of the clinics if you get the chance I caught Hungry's clinic last year, well worth the small (very small) amount of money it cost .

I have used a small screw driver and alot of patience and gently pry it off .
You may find that you need to straighten it a bit afterward.

The Pic above is showing the "Front band", the ferrule is the "U" shaped piece on the stock that the front band sits in.

Ok, perhaps I wasn't accurate: I am looking to remove the ferule that remains wrapped around the barrel and gas cylinder, not the ferule, if that is what it is called, that remains on the stock.

That part is usually called the barrel band. If your flash suppressor can be removed, it should be straight forward after that. Some good wacks with a chisel on what's left of the bayonette lug and the spot welds on the flash suppressor may just let go. After that, if its a typical loose fitting Norinco, you just unscrew the gas lock and the rest slides off.
