Removing mounting rails from German built scopes

I see many types of older German built scopes on ebay and such that I'm curious to try out. All these scopes have prior mounting appendages on them however, and I'll be using standard rings to mount them. How easy or difficult is it to remove the said mounts or rails from the underside of these scopes?

You have to strip the scope and then unsolder the existing mount. Not for the feint of heart as some have a Zamak type metal erector cell casing and once you touch it you get a handful of dust. Plus many of the screws have almost grown into the scope tube and once you break them you have to get handy with a No.60 drills and smaller to remove them. Then you have to re-tap to either metric or BA as many are proprietary thread. Plus, have the taps to do it. Also, check the dia. of the tube...you might not get rings or have to make bushings to use existing rings.
Almost forgot...then you have to reassemble the scope: focus the scope and focus the reticule... each one is an independent function.

you are better off to find the proper mount for the scope or buy something modern that is easy to deal with

That scope has an aluminum tube, so short of machining it, I doubt you'll get the rail off. It's actually a good system of mounting and looks cleaner than most rings. Maybe not quite a strong as good rings, but probably strong enough for most people. EAW makes all kinds of mounts to adapt to those rails.

Oh, you will have a "success" all right, but you will also have an expensive useless paperweight that will probably have a melted spot in it. You will have "successfully" ruined an expensive scope. And "tapping" with a MALLET is not the brightest of ideas on a delicate precision instrument.

Think of it like performing the same proposed operations on your expensive digital camera or high priced binoculars or spotting scope.

Another thing about E-Bay is that you can not legally buy a scope in the United States and have it shipped to Canada withoul a lot of paperwork and expense.

It is much "cheaper" in the long run to simply buy a good moderately priced scope from your local dealer. BEWARE. There are Chinese Leupold knock off scopes out there so act accordingly.
