This really really sucks.

I had removed the rear sight assembly before when I bought the rifle, cleaned out all the oil, then put it back together a year ago and now for the life of me I cannot get it off again!

I must have been fiddling with the screws for an hour trying to back them all off and hoping that the pinion would just pop out... but it won't have it seems to be still threaded onto something...

I tried this guide here
http://www.civilianmarksmanship.com/striphtml/detailstripsight3.html

Its for the garand, which the sights look identical.. Maybe they're not because that guide isn't working at all. I back off the windage knob screw and then hold the elevation knob and try to twist off the windage knob, it doesn't come off...

Could use some help here, the sights are now practically dangling off of the rifle and just won't screw off...

Thanks in advance.

I had the same problem with the the Norinco sights. I just kept turning the screw forever and it wouldn't come apart. Finally I just grabbed both knobs, pulled, and the sight came apart. Give it a try. You don't have to pull very hard at all.

Yep the Garand sites and M14 are the exact same . Except the M14 is marked in meters and the garand in yards .Loosen the center screw in the windage knobwhile holding another acrewdriver in the screw of the elevation pinion.Get it all the way loose the back out the windage knob from the rear site base turning left. At that point when you have the windage gone the elevation shout just pull out. Keep in mind there will be some resistance due to it being racked in with the gear rack on the aperature .
Once you get it out you will see it is really a piece of cake !
Hope this helps ....
Mike

Be careful with how you put it back together though, some of the norinco rear sights sometimes do not go back together properly and they never will which is what forced me to get italian garands sights(there better anyways but still costly).

You have to be carefull and pay attention when reassembling because the windage knob threads are not round but are in a "D" shape and you must mate this to the "D" shape of the elevation pinion.
Take a look and you will se what I am referring to . This could be your problem with reassembly.

Wow, I tried pulling them as hard as I could, no dice.

I'm thinking of ####ing cutting them off... this is seriously getting rediculous. I want to paint this rifle and every night I paint a small part, like the gas block, the flash hider, trigger group parts. I'm running out of parts to paint until I get to the barrel/reciever! lol.

I'm going to give it one last good change to try and de-thread and twist these suckers off properly, after that I'll introduce them to the sawzel. I don't want to wreck them, but I was thinking of getting the garand sights anways.
