I have a nice Winchester 100 with a D&T'd picatinny scope base and irons. I want to remove my base and just run irons with it for a while for brush hunting but I want the threads protected and have the base an option I can return too. What's the preferred method of keeping them safe? Can I melt a tiny bit of beeswax into them to stop them from possibly getting dinged up or is that dumb? Should I just grease the threads lightly and not even worry about it?
