Just purchased a new SKS,full of cosmoline as usual, cleaned it
out and was moving on to the gas assy and it will not come off
no matter what I do or where the lever on the sight is sitting.
Anybody had this problem? It is unfired as I want to clean it
out first.Any suggestions on how to remove it? Thanks 375rum

pull the lever up so it lets the gas piston come free, then yank it on the back up tube upwards, the cosmo might be acting as a sort of glue if it's been there awhile so it might take a bit og jiggling to get it out the 1st time.

Make sure when you pull the lever that you don't pull it too far up. I did this the first time removing mine and the gas piston extension and spring will push up against the end of the gas piston tube causing it to bind. I find the best way to aviod this is to put one hand on the hand guard and pull up. With your other hand slowly move the release lever upwards until the tube slides out. You can find a good reference at http://www.surplusrifle.com/sks/carbine/index.asp

Good luck!

After working with the FN, I find the SKS system a little odd, can't see the benefit of having a 2 part piston, except perhaps for ease of manufacture. I have to say that the gas port lever is a clever design, with the two functions.

I have tried all sugestions to date, still no go,have now shot the
carbine as dealer suggested, that did'nt work either, this is a pain
in the *** any help would be appreciated. Thanks Pete

That lever has to be place just right. Too or too low and it won't work. It takes a little trial and error when you first do it. Try gently pulling up on the assembly while you slowly love the lever.

`There's nothing holding it in except the cam on the lever. At about 45 degrees it should allow the end of the piston assembly to clear. Look down at it and once the cam is straight up and down, take a screw driver wrapped in cloth and pry the bottom of the tube up.
