I'm going to be mounting a front and rear side sling system on my 870. I don't have them yet but I want to familiarize myself with this before I get the parts. I removed the recoil pad from the butt and started unscrewing the large bolt inside the butt holding it to the receiver. It wouldn't unscrew all the way, as in it didn't actually come out of the butt. It loosened to a point and that was it. Is the butt now supposed to slide off the receiver? Because it wouldn't, I tried twisting a bit, no joy. Any help/suggestions would be appreciated. I tried a bit of WD40 on the bolt but no luck. If I try loosening it more it goes stiff.

is there a washer on the bolt thats getting stuck while you're removing it??? It should unscrew completely...

I thought it should come out completely. There is a washer there and now that I think of it as you mention it, it didn't seem to be moving, oddly enough because it should.

I don't think there's anything at the bolt's end. Corrosion, maybe.
Just strip the gun from its barrel, get the trigger block out and have a look. Put some Kroil or other good thread loosener on the thread's end (NOT WD-40, it is good water displacement stuff but no heavy-duty performer as a thread loosener) then screw and unscrew the thing until it gets tired and begs for mercy.
Good luck!
