Removing the bayonet lug from an SKS?

I'm planning on buying an SKS for plinking, but like the look of the rifle better once the bayonet, bayonet lig and cleaning rod have been removed from the barrel.

I'd like mine to have simply the ### trap and ront sight attached to an otherwise naked barrel, but I don't want to damage the rifle. I want mine to have a barrel similar to this one:

Is there a way to remove these parts while retaining the front sight and if possible, not permanently damaging the bayolug etc. if I ever want to reattach or something?

On mine, the front sight and bayonet lug appear to be machined out of the same billet. To remove the bayonet lug, you'd have to cut/grind it off and re-blue the bare metal. The front sight/bayo-lug assembly is removable (2 pins to drift out and a 3-jaw puller to get it off, probably), but once you get rid of the lug it's gone for good. If you wanted to have a bayonet lug again, you might be able to buy the front sight assembly as a spare part (Lever Arms has a pile of SKS parts listed on their website right now), but I don't know for sure. Hope that helps!

You could replace the original front sight/bayonet lug with one that has been ground or cut to eliminate the lug.
That way, if you want to restore the gun to its original configuration, you simply switch the parts back.
If you need a perforated steel upper handguard, you can get one gas piston tube with the shield already spotwelded on.
Just check in places where they sell SKS parts.
PP.

The front sight on my Chinese SKS is/was pinned. It was however an SOB of a job to get it off, and I did bend the barrel.

I just removed the bayonet and installed a metal bipod that I bought off EBay.

That's the way I'd go (or rather, plan to go, as soon as I pick up another SKS from Lever this weekend), less screwing around and more functionality out of a normally useless part :D I can't speak for anyone else, but I really don't plan on bayoneting anyone/anything in the near future :p

BTW randyhub, how do you find that stock as far as takedown and cleaning and stuff? I'd like to build a Dragunov myself, but I'm not sure which stock to go with, the ATI or the Choate (the ATI looks cooler, if you ask me, but the Choate is less of a pain in the ass from what I've read). I also can't find a source for Choate drill-n-tap scope mounts (I'd like to mount a Marstar 42mm red-dot), and the pin-on muzzle brake from marstar doesn't appeal to me at all, I'd like to find one of those heavy duty ones that twist on and lock w/set-screws. If anyone knows where to get the good stuff, PM me or lemme know, I've got a credit card and I'm not afraid to use it! :D

P.S; sorry 'bout the hijack Skippy! Blame randyhub, his picture got me all excited!

I took the (nutered bayo lug/front site) off my SKS-D and replaced it with one that still had a bato lug on it. I had to cut and grind the crap out of the orignal to get it of, and putting the new one back on was a pain in the ass as well. To do what you want, you have to remove the lug/post and cut off the lug part where it meets the post. Then reinstall. OR, since you want it undamaged, buy another lug/post and do it to that. But I gotta tell ya, their was NO way I could have gotten mine off with out cutting it up.

Well I would not make any permanent alterations to your SKS Chinese or Russian. Spend a little more and get a Choate or one of the new M4 style stocks as my ATI needed fitting and is difficult to takedown. Here are some links, PS I don't feel I Bubba'd my SKS (guns)

Thanx for the links, I'm currently in negotiations with one of the vendors (the guy that has all the SKS dress-up packages, like this one; http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7226766090&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1)
to get a different package put together w/all the stuff I want :D

As far as the bayo lug is concerned, I agree with randyhub, any permanent modifications are going to be 1) a pain to do with just basic hand tools, and 2) a pain to reverse if you do change your mind. It's not impossible, and if you're willing to do all the fiddling around and sight the thing in again when you're done (which means you'd need to buy the sight adjusting tool), then go for it. Good luck!
