removing the breech plug.....Unsafe?

Hi, I've got a dryball in my flintlock, I'd like to get it out soon.

I've been thinking of removing the breech plug, and popping the patched ball out. However, I may be one of the few people who actually read the manuals that come with the things I buy, not just skim through, and my owners manual says that if I remove the breech plug, I void the warranty.

Are the makers just being uptight or is there actually some danger in removing the breech plug?

Unless the intent of the maunfacturer was to engineer the rifle to have a removable breech plug - dont.

It voids warranty, and you have no idea what removal / replacement of the breech plug will have on the integrity of the rifle. Are none of the various ramrod accessories having any effect on removing the obstruction?

It is very difficult to remove some breach plugs. Far easier to either trickle 4 F powder in behind the ball and shoot it out or to make up a ball puller matched to the bore of your barrel and pull it out. With regards to ball pullers, do not use one on the end of a wooden ramrod; the chances of breaking the rod or pulling the end off are excellent. Use a metal rod for pulling and have the area just above the screw made of brass or surrounded in something soft and just under bore diameter so that the screw centers on the ball. With my gun I had to tie the metal rod to a well secured vice and yank several times to get the ball moving.

What i do with these, is take some steel rod a couple of inches long, and thread one end with threads, the same as the nipple. then drill and tap he other end to accept a grease nipple.Drill a hole to allow the grease to go through.turn it into the nippel hole,pump grease thru it and out comes the stuck whatever.works like a charm.
 
With a flinter you are going to have to weld a screw to a suitable metal rod and vice it to pull it out.Or like advised get some powder down the flash hole and shoot it out. A percusion can be pumped out manually by replacing the nipple with a same threaded grease nipple from an auto supply store and pump the pbarrel with a loaded grease gun until it is forced out.Then clean with boiling water.good luck...............Harold
 
The easiest way is to unscrew the ventliner, if you have one and if you can. trickle some 4F or 3F into the hole, screw the ventliner back in and touch it off. Works like a charm. The ball will go a little way so its best to point it at the ground first. :D

This technique worked for me many times (helping other shooters ...mainly!..),
it is slow but get the job done without too much complications. 4 or 3 f powder worked...just make sure the space is dry (no oil), and fill it gently, pour...tap/tap...and so on.
 
i reciently had to remove a dry-balled, ball. with just a small amount of powder u should be able to pop it out, not that much noise and its pretty quick.
 
I had to remove a patched ball from my flinter a month ago. The ball puller would grab but not move it all the way out. Eventually after many tries the ball puller would not grab the ball because I had pulled to much of the center of the ball out and it would no longer grab the ball.

In the end I unscrewed the touch hole liner and poured (carefully) about 10 grains of FFFG. Worked like a charm and didn't take as much time. I farted around with the ball puller for the better part of two hours.
