I am considering removing the charger guide (completely) from a No.1 MK.III* Lee Enfield. This rifle has already been sportered beyond rescuing and I want to get that guide out of my line of sight.

While I will likely employ a smithy to do the work I am just wondering if anyone knows if removal of the complete charger guide will adversly affect the strength of the action (eg, when I was young people thought cutting the tops off of VW bugs to make convertibles was a good idea until the unibody finally gave out and they broke in half)?

thanks in advance for any replies.

You don't even have to drill all the way through, just drill the top part of the rivets and use a punch to drive the remainder out.

Removing it will not affect the strength of the action.
