Removing varnish.

I recieved a nice hunting double 12 gauge today and upon looking at it, ther seems to be a coat of varnish over what I believe is the original finish. Now I don't want to try and restore this gun to like new condition, but I would like to try and remove the varnish and clean up the original finish. Any suggestions on how to remove it without damaging the old stuff? In some areas I can chip it off with my finger nails so it's not really bonded to it. Is there a solvent perhaps that can help?

home depot and get 1895 furniture stripper. It is guaranteed not to harm fine finishes. I used it on several of my early winchester woods. It worked great. Spray on ...wipe off.

Acetone also works well at lifting finishes, but leaves the stain mostly alone.

Whatever you do, test it first on a small area where it won't be noticed.

What make and model of gun is it? That may have a bearing on what should be used. Some of the newer guns( past 30 years or so) have an Epoxy like clear coat on them.

Just a tip, don't use acetone, it will melt the finish (diluted) into the wood.

1895 furniture stripper will remove all surface finishes down to the bare wood. It will not attack glue joins
in the wood if they are there. You will have to refinish the wood and reseal it.
