Hi Guys,

Just a quick question to the Remy 700 Experts. This is for the action/receiver only.

I know the dimensions are the the same for all Remy 700 receivers. My question is:

Is the grade of stainless steel the same between a Remy 5R receiver and a Remy 700 SPS Stainless receiver?

Let's say both in .308 caliber.

Take it easy on me, I'm still learning.

I can not think of any reason they would use different stainless steel between actions. I am quite sure they use one stainless steel for the stainless actions and one chrome moly steel for their blued actions.

Any one that thinks they actually stop production to change steel for sps rifles is on glue. I think its funny when people advertise that their custom was not a crappy sps action. All the chrome moly and stainless actions are the same its just the final finish that is different.

Did you really just say that cro-mo and stainless actions were the same except for finish?

And elemental makeup. Minor issue though.

No I said that a chrome moly CDL and chrome moly SPS are the same and a stainless CDL and stainless SPS are the same. They are made the same day one after the other and just completed with different finishes.

Too many people think that these tacticool guns are somehow super special with different metallurgy and more precise machining..........bad news for ya, as both Guntech and bd said they are spit out the end of the production line one after the other with exactly the same steels going in one end and coming out the other, all SS actions are the same and all CrMo actions are exactly the same, regardless of which rifle they end up being used for. Some go to the custom shop and some are used for SPSs and the amount of finish work done is the only real difference. AND all are extremely strong and reliable and have great accuracy potential..........

Do you think they sort them according to their measure tolerances? Separating those at top limit from those at bottom limit?

Yes they do. The ones with the tighter tolerances go to the Remington Custom Shop and are used to make 40X's. Read that in an article in Precision Shooting about 25 years ago.

So they are not all the same then. The higher end remingtons do have better machining

Same machine and same process just some parts come off with tighter tolerances. Cutter inserts wear so maybe the first 10 after an insert change is within a couple tenths of a thou, while the next 50 parts are .0005-.001 still within the manufacturing tolerance. From what I can remember from the article the lettering on the 700 actions were roll stamped and the 40X actions were engraved. But again I am going off memory from about 25 years ago, some of the weaker brain cells have been killed off.
