Has anyone here tried to render bear fat? Would you do it the same as pork fat, or are there any precautions or extra steps? I've heard from several sources that bear lard is excellent for pastries and cooking in general.

And lastly, what does it taste like?

Grind the fat up or chop fine. The finer chop the easier to melt down. Place in a roast pan. Put in an oven @350. The fat will melt. Occasionally pour off the fat into a container and return roaster to oven. keep it up until you feel you have all the fat extracted. I use it for ML bullet lube mix 50/50 with bees wax.

I render it and use if for bisquits and pie crust. It's very good, a little sweet tasting. I usually mix it with butter for baking as it kind of coats your throat and too much of any good thing is bad. When you render it and after it's melted make sure you heat it until it stops boiling. When the boiling is done all the water has evaporated and it will keep for years well srapped and frozen.
