 Ive asked this before......
Does anyone know of any buckskinners or mountain men rendezvous shoots or clubs in central ontario?
Not a frontiersmen shoot at a CAS event....Im talking Old School stuff.

There is a Rendezvous at the Eganville Gun Club In August and another at the Quadeville Gun Club in September. These are shooting events. There are several more non-shooting events throughout the summer - Gananoque, Wasaga Beach etc.
If you're interested I can find out the organizer's contact information.

As far as I know there are no winter events. We did have an informal shoot yesterday - just for fun.

PM sent.

Ya not really into the period soldier uniform thing......did some civil reanactment stuff about 25 years ago. Im looking for Buckskinners. But thanks anyways.

There already is the Ontario Muzzle Loading Association that puts on the Provincial Shoot every August long weekend at the Trails End range near Chatham Ont. It is not a buckskinner event but a patch and ball style shoot for 4 days. It has been in slow decline since most new muzzle loading shooters go for the inline guns and hunt not target shoot. It may get 35 shooters. It took down its web site about 3 years ago due to very few folks looking at it and it not bringing in new shooters.
It is a sad fact but the old style of muzzle loader shooting and rondezvous are fading.

I've been considering this, as a young person who's interested in old guns. I'd say the BP clubs might have to change their methods (IE actively look for members). So few young people are exposed to firearms these days (in any way other than the media) that I suspect there is an overall decline in new gun owners. Since BP shooters are a small percentage of overall shooters it makes sense that they feel the decline a lot more than larger groups.

I don't know how much of a pipe dream this is, but opening up rondys to university age men and women would be a good way of getting attention from a younger crowd that has the money and abilities to actually get involved. You'd need to get the message out to people outside the general firearms community and have members around to handle people trying out the guns, but I think it would do a fair bit to further both BP shooting and the shooting sports in general. The biggest issue I see is that BP groups aren't well known, even to the shooting community. For an outsider to the shooting world they may as well not exist at all.

I back this theory up with the evidence of a range trip organised for a class of mine in university. Only 3 of the 28 people at the shoot had ever touched a firearm, yet by far the most popular guns were the flintlocks and percussion guns and as a result 2 people got their PALs. Just something to think about.

Maybe someone could merge some black powder stuff with the action cowboy events?

You also should consider the growing and great sport of BPCR.
At least in western Canada BPCR is growing.
You want challange?
And the nicest and most helpful people?

We are working on a website.
There are 7 three day shoots split between 2 ranges in sask and alberta already orgainzed for 2013.
There are other groups too, for example kamloops and winnipeg.

Too much splintering within the firearms community in Canada, in my opinion.
Why not a Canada wide website for black powder?

That is sad news. And certainly the popularity of the inline for hunters (and CASS) is responsible. Mind you myself I purchased a new to me Browning Mountain Rifle this fall and I love the darn thing. Just got the lock back from L&R Lock Company as that thirty year old mainspring gave up the ghost. But now it's fixed just fine.

Is there a place to get some more info these shoots right now? Looking to organize my shoot calender for the coming year.

Lethbridge will likely have an informal BPCR shoot May long weekend.

Sorry for the delay re BPCR matches for 2013.
Though there has been talk of a website for BPCR Western Canada there is nothing off the ground yet.
But there is an active and growing number of 3 day matches and shooters in SASK and AB.
Great sport and the nicest bunch of people I have met in the shooting sports.

A point of contact for BPCR western Canada start here...
