Just wondering if there's any places in or near Winnipeg that rent pistols, especially glocks. My RPAL is in the mail (FINALLY), and after a lot of thought, I think I've decided Glocks are my best bet for pistols. I've decided this mainly on their reputation for durabilty, simply put, I've never owned ANYTHING nice for any period of time. I want something that will survive being owned by me :) So I need to now try out some, see how they fit in the hand, etc.
I know a place in the US, but if I could do it here that'd be great.
I also realize I'll need a membership somewhere to use it when I buy it, but I want to have something to use at a range before I start paying for a membership.
Thanks.

Why not head down to wholesale sports and play with one. If it feels good in your hand, chances are it'll be OK. For most people don't who don't like Glocks, it's because of a) the looks b) eww! plastic! or c) grip angle. Sounds like you're ok with A and B. Go feel some up. :D

As mentioned above, go down to Wholesale Sports and handle a few pistols. I believe they had a 17 or 22 there last time I went. Have you shot a Glock before? I personally find the trigger on a Glock a bit awkward
What model are you looking at?

I'm definitely thinking 9mm at first anyway, just to be shooting affordably. Back in Sept I shot your 9mm, Matt, what brand was that? And I'm very serious about needing something tough, that will take abuse. If there's a way something CAN be broken, I'll find it. Most likely, I'll be buying at the start of the new year ($$$). My plan is to have a 9mm Glock to shoot, whichever one feels best in the hand, and a redhawk .44 for fun. Eventually I'll probably upgrade to .40 or .45, and long term, there's gonna be a .500 s&w somewhere mixed in there. I better end this post here, it's already up to about $3500, and the license hasn't hit my mailbox yet.

Curt, give Wolverine Supplies a call. They're located just outside Virden so it's well within a days drive to check out what they've got. I love the drive out to Virden, especially if they've got a new toy waiting for me.

Don't overlook the XD if you're thinking Glock. I have one in .40 and I like it. I think it would be hard to hurt and XD as it's a pretty solid gun.
Nothing wrong with the Glock but I prefer the XD. I also have an MP9 that isn't bad either but it feels more, for lack of a better term, fragile.

Back in Sept I shot your 9mm, Matt, what brand was that?

It's a Walther P1. They're available from Trade Ex Canada for $300. www.tradeexcanada.com ....not a bad starter pistol for the price IMO....however now Glocks are available for decent prices ($650 for a new G17).

If you could make it down to Virden, you would get to handle a pile of pistols.
Are you still looking at an SMD12?

yeah, I'm waiting for canam to have the mag loading 8.5" shottie and only if it's non-restricted, and going to stay that way. Also probably going to get a stevens 200 in .300 win mag. But we're here to talk pistols :p Is Virden the closest GUN store? I know SIR and WSS HAVE guns, but is virden the closest real one? If that's where I have to go, that's fine, but damn, 2 hours each way?
Just to reassure everyone, I plan on handling a lot of pistols before I pick one. I'm not going to just fall in love with the first one I see, and even then, I still get to have more than one (if only wives worked like that). I don't have any guns I don't like, just ones I want to try.
Matt, how is selkirk g&f in the winter? I know the winnipeg pistol & revolver association has the indoor range, but if selkirk is still open and well kept up in winter, I can wear a coat.
Thanks

Last I heard Selkirk does clear their snow in the winter. Bring a tarp to catch your brass though. They tend to sink down in the snow when they are warm.

You should have seen the look on the wife's face last night, I told her I was going to west end on a "fondling mission" Once I explained I meant going to wholesale to feel up some glocks, she understood. I do believe my first pistol will be the glock 17, it fits my hand quite comfortably. Now to get the range membership, and save the $$$ for it (more than halfway there). I also handled the s&w 460, it's like they came up here and molded the grips right from my hands :) I also tried a couple ruger pistols which were too small. Of course my mind isn't entirely made up, I still plan on taking a drive out to virden, some time in the next month, for some more thorough research.
