After how many rounds do I need to replace my recoil spring in a:

Glock 22
Glock 23
Beretta 92FS
Taurus 92 compact

?

I'm curious because I'm looking at buying a few used pistols with little more than 1000 rounds through them and want to know what kind of maintenance issues I'm going to need to pay for etc.

You can't over replace them. General rule for recoil springs. Hold your pistol muzzle facing up. Retract the slide just out of battery, about 1/2 inch. Slowly release the slide. It should drag itself back into battery. If it does not, your spring needs changing.

Perfect, that seems practical!

^I'm not sure that will work with all guns though...

I would say when using 'regular; power ammo if your cases land more than 6 feet away from the gun the speing is too weak/worn out (should be 3-6ft.)

Also I know with 92FS when the recoil spring becomes shorter than 5in incompressed it needs to be replaced.

IM luger,

you're quite right. There are some more specific tests or measurements for each firearm that should be considered. The method I describe is an easy "field" method of testing. I replace my springs quite frequently, atleast once a year sometimes more. Springs are cheap so I don't mind doing it.

Most manufacturers suggest replacement at 5000rds. I replace them when they look warped or kinked regardless. Captive springs (like the Glock) are sometimes difficult to inspect but they are also fairly cheap too.
