Replacement options for NEA handguard

Umm, just because they're restricted, doesn't mean you can't shoot in CQB style competitions, take tactical courses, or even run tactical style drills at your local range (provided you have the room)...

And provided the range and/or provincial CFO allow such antics.....

I'm going to use it for IPSC.
My question about changing the gas tube was in regards to if I went to a shorter hand guard. My NEA is coming with a 12" hand guard. If I go to a shorter hand guard won't the gas block and gas tube be exposed? Right now they are hidden under the hand guard. I've never had an NEA upper apart so I don't how far up the 14.5" barrel the gas block is.
As for that jerk face SPRTN308 he pointed out the weight is in the barrel, not the hand guard. If I really want to cut the weight I should go to a goverment profile barrel.

An exposed gas tube, while not ideal for IPSC/3-gun style dynamic shooting, will still work.

If you wanted to cover it up, your best bet really is a carbon tube.

Dude, the gas block sits around 7 1/2" or so, so, you can definitely go with a shorter rail and still have the gas block covered up, but, 12" is just bad ass...
 
If it is a mid length gas system, if you go to a 9" rail/handguard only the gas block should be exposed. With the handguard starting right behind the gas block covering the gas tube. Which is not be a problem. If its a carbine length gas sytem, the handguard will cover the gas block.
 
! think i heard all NEA are carbine length until you move up to the dmr... so you should be ok to go with a shorter rail... but it wont save you much weight. lose the barrel length and a lighter profile or as SPRTN says man the F up :)
 
Unless you go with a carbon fibre tube, you won't save a lot of weight.

The NEA rail is already pretty low weight as they go (about 1oz. per inch I think). I really like the Troy Ind. Alpha/Extreme rails (the 13" length would be about perfect for a 14.5" bbl), or the KAC URXIII (tool+rail is pricey, though).

As for the NEA bbl gas lengths:
7.5" bbl is pistol length
10.5" and 14.5" bbl is carbine length
18" is mid length

Trying to lighten up an already relatively light rifle before handling it and putting 4-500 rounds through it is ridiculous. Get the rifle, get a feel for it, shoot it, then decide if you need to change something up.

I swear, if we let him, he'll actually buy everything he needs to build a complete rifle before this one actually arrives...
 
By the way, I weighed my 18" NEA tonight. With just MBUS it weighs 7.25 lbs. I don't know how that stacks up, but, to compare, the same rifle with an S&J 16.5" would weigh 10oz less.
 
How about actually shooting the rifle before modifying it.

Boys just because I haven't shot mine yet doesn't mean I haven't shot other people's NEA's. I'm 6', 220, I can run it as it, but the lighter the better for the game I play.
