I gave my old Sears 64b .22lr to my GF for Christmas. My dad bought it when he came to Canada in 1968. It shoots reliably enough but the rear sight is impossible to get set.A Slot screw holds the sight and a loose wedge controls elevation. My GF doesn't want to sell the gun as it has history in the family.
She does not want a scope. She's picky and stubborn but lets me buy lots of toys when we can afford it so she's a keeper too.

Has anyone ever had new sights fitted? I was thinking about standard 10/22 rear but it would require a dovetail being cut.
What about a rear peep? Do you need a new front as well?

I don't mind spending some cash on a smith. End result is a fun gun for her that has history and I get a new .22!

It might be easier to adjust front sight instead. If it has been filed off and too short (i have seen it happen) so that rear sight is at the stops - consider building up the front sight with silver solder and filing it to size. Hope that helps. As for keeping the girl - that is different topic altogether.

Replacing the front sight is pretty easy as well if it has been filed down too far. Any gun shop should be able to set you with a replacement. Just make sure its for the correct dovetail width, then simply take a brass punch and hammer and tap out the old one and replace it with the new. Make sure you tap from the correct side as a lot of dovetails are cut that way.

Another option is to make up a new stepped "elevator" for the rear sight. The steel has enough strength to flex a little further if necessary, so you can cut it a little bigger than the original elevator. Any metal shop should be able to make one up for you in a couple of minutes if you aren't handy, or if you are, ask them from some scrap, heavy guage sheet metal and cut it yourself. I've done the latter a couple of times for friends with older rimfires.
