Talking with someone at Colt, he actually recommended this collapsible:

I don't think they ship to Canada, so am assuming it's okay to post the hyperlink (not in competition with a Cdn sponsor).

I'm very much a newbie at this- what would be involved in changing it over from a fixed stock, in terms of parts, cost, effort?

Thanks for the comments (well, the polite ones at least!).

Try questar. They sell complete kits if you want to go collapsible on your ar. C/w tube, buffer, spring and stock. Not sure if it comes with the little detent that keeps the buffer in once the setup is installed.

should really look at the length of your barrel as well- i have a 20 inch that would dead stupid with a carbine back end on it- and you don't really gain all that much by going to a collapsible-

Not sure what you mean by this...

An alternative to a collapsible stock would be something like an UBR stock, it's just as strong as a fixed stock, but you get the adjustable length of pull, if you're running an 18" > barrel

but if you're slapping that on a carbine, then yeah a standard collapsible stock's the way to go...

you may want to look at getting a vise block as well, i've built my own lowers and being able to clamp your receiver down in a vise makes it super easy

i guess i'm kind of thinking about a C7a2 effect- 20" barrel, but collapsable stock:
