I came across this video of a man melting his birdshot into slugs, it seems like a decent idea and i'd like to try it out because i'm too cheap to plink with store bought slugs. Now I understand they are probably not the most accurate slug but is there anything unsafe about replacing the shot with a solid piece of lead?

crappy tire sells those bulkpacks of steel birdshot, does anyone know where I can find that type of deal but with lead?

many thanks :)

Clarification needed:
Are you inquiring about using birdshot as material to create slugs and then placing thoss slugs back into that same hull without changing any of the components?
Or simply using the shot to melt into slugs and then placing the slugs in a different hull w/a slug specific recipe?

I have done it. I cut the top off of cheapo winchester shells, dumped the lead out and cast them into slugs using a lee mould. Then I pushed them back in. Just left the powder and wad in like Yman does. Worked fine in both my Mossy 500 and 930. Probally doesnt achieve optimum performace but it does work, and I have yet to blow up my shotties. I have also used lead wheel weights.

Wow and I thought I was an enthusiasm. Very Impressive.
if it work for him it should work for you, but why not just reload Slugs ?

exactly, it seems like the easiest way to make my own slugs. My mossberg is rated for 3" shells so I figure if I reload the 2 3/4" stuff, it should be fine. I'd just like to run the idea by the pro's before I start.

LeBarons sells #8 2-3/4" 250per box

Works out to about 40 cents per shot - yes it works btw. I use the rounds for target practice at the range and for practical shotgun matches. Its kicks less than a slug round, cheaper as well. Usually its a dollar per slug in stores.

That is one crafty guy. Whatever he needs, he just makes for himself. If I were to try something, I'd probably just buy the stuff, he's got a lot more creativity and ingenuity than I've got.

Can you devise "homemade buckshot" in a similar fashion?.......

Pretty handy and savvy fellow!.....

Great attitude, too!

"definite kill there", most likely a kill", "slow lingering death, slow lingering death".....

Walmart sells Winchester bulk pack lead universal/target loads.
keep in mind that many shotguns dont cycle these 100% reliably - its the cheap aluminum hulls. in this case its worth it to spend a bit more for something a lot better.

The red brick of 100 shells? I pulled a few apart and it looked like steel shot to me, but i didn't pay much attention... guess i'll have another look

That's good to know! 40 cents is a nice improvement for the poor and needy :D

I don't think it would be much of a problem, as the weight and material remain the same. My understanding is that it is a fairly standard practice to use shot loading data for single projectiles of the same weight.

The red 100 winchester cheap crap brick at canadian tire is lead shot. I know that for a fact. They work fine in my Mossberg! They come to about 30 cents a shot, being 30$ for 100 shells.

Here's my way of getting cheap slug practice.

I'm /k/anadian, posting this on another board. Again, this is for information only, I do NOT recommend modifying ammo in ANY WAY.

With that out of the way, these are a lot of fun, not much work, and great for practice. Not a working slug for anything else than paper though, unless you used a bigger shot that would have 12" in gel, etc.

Useless people Like Wendy have forced it upon him. This is the product of their retarded legislation.
