I am looking for a rifle to replace my RPR in 308. I bought it in March thinking I would be able to seriously get into long range shooting but reality hit me and I rarely got out this summer. It's only going to get worse with a baby on the way in early 2017. I am looking to get something that will be a good all around bolt action rifle in 308,for hunting and occasional target shooting. I still have a savage fcp-k in 223 for target shooting as well.

I really like the Savage I have so getting the same thing in 308 is a consideration. I was thinking of getting a Tikka as I don't think I've heard anyone say anything bad about them. The question is what model. There is the compact tactical rifle but I don't know how good that would be for hunting. Does anyone have any recommendations on what rifle would be best for both hunting and occasional target shooting.

Savage BA stealth maybe?? Could probably hunt with that. The new version Tikka CTR would be good too. Not sure how heavy of a rifle you would use. After lugging my muzzleloader around, pretty sure those two I mentioned would not be any heavier.

Regular Tikka T3 is a great rifle, CTR just adds more expensive, mags with more capacity (I have one). Another option is the Weatherby Vanguard 2. Great rifle for the money, on my list as my next possible purchase in 30-06.

Will it be for primarily hunting or bench rest shooting? That's how you find your answer. Heavy barrel won't necessarily shoot better other than on long strings of shooting with no time to cool down. With the thin sporter weights you can shoot a group and allow it time to cool otherwise you will have stringing.

If you are planning to shoot multiples of shots within a short period of time then a heavier barrel will make sense like in varmint hunting or competitive shooting where 10-20 shots may be required in a few minutes. For shooting 1-3 shots every several minutes then the regular barrel would probably work well. I would always buy a heavier barrel if it was available and reasonably priced so that I avoid the issue (real or not). I don't mind carrying a pound or two more. If I was really weight conscious, I'd focus on the 10's of extra pounds I'm lugging around all the time :)

I don't rifle hunt very often but if I get asked to go on a moose hunt then I want a gun I can take. I thought originally I would be target shooting weekly but in reality it might be 5-10 times per year. Also primary target shooting will be with my 223. Looks like a regular T3 is what I am looking for.

Someone also mentioned weatherby vanguard. Is there anything else that would be comparable? Browning maybe?

Weatherby Vanguard 2s are in the entry level cost (when they're on sale just under $600) that perform much better than their price would lead you to believe. Brownings are great rifles but cost a bit more and are similar to the Tikka T3 in price depending on the model. The lower end price points have the Savage Axis, Ruger American, Remington 783 and Mossberg Patriot along with the Weatherby Vanguard 2s. All have their pluses and minus and lots of reviews out there. Above that you've got the Tikkas, Remington 700s, Browning x-bolts and the Savage 16/11s.

The t3 tikkas are good all around rifles, pretty much any t3 in 308 win. should do you fine.

Have fun.

Ruger scout in .308 with the 18.5" stainless barrel. Just as accurate as anything else and as reliable as any other ruger. Lots of guns have passed through my safe but that one is my ultimate go to utility rifle

The ruger scout is good another option if you like shorter "handier" bush rifles. Tikka has one also in the Tikka Battue - shorter barrel, funky sights (never tried it) built along the same lines of an handy bush rifle. Another option but with more mixed reviews is the Mossberg Patrol in 308. I had one but didn't like the sloppy bolt design needed to feed off SR25-type mags. Cool idea but mechanically clunky in the version I owned - accurate but not slick like the Tikkas.
