I recently purchased my first restricted in the form of a P226R Dark Elite and at a fairly decent price range.

The condition is pretty good and it's already got all the features I wanted like the SRT. However, how do I check if I need a new barrel or not? From my naked eye, I would say it's pretty well worn (but I also have no idea what worn looks like). I would post pictures but I'm not sure how those pictures would turn out.

It is unlikely the barrel is shot out if the gun looks good. It would typically take close to 100k rounds to do so. However a replacement barrel is about $275

^ Agreed

I have seen it at work, but few Civi's could afford that much ammo.

Easy way to tell if your gun has shot a lot is by the wear on the outside of the barrel. If all of the finish is worn of to a mirror finish, then its probably worn on the inside.

You will break a sig frame before the barrel is shot out. My old work P226 had close to 30k rounds on it and was still shooting sub 4" 25 yard groups but was on the third frame.

Never seen that on railed frames and I have a few barrels that were smooth bores. Maybe Frang wheres the barrel more? or newer frames are more durable?

Or maybe its a 40S&W issue

It was a 9mm railed frame gun from 2009 frames were cracked and replaced in 2010 and 2012. I don't know the cause of it I just know that they replaced the frames for free and it really just cemented my preference for Glocks and HKs swing as how I have 2 Glocks with over 30k with no issues other than the recoil and trigger spring wearing out and an extractor breaking and a HK45c with 17k and not a single issue besides the recoil spring wearing out at about 12k.

Weird must of been a bad lot, I know the early SIGs had issues with +p ammo but never seen it on newer guns.
