I have a Ruger stainless laminate compact (16.5" bbl, 308 win). Despite its length, it feels heavier than my Ruger Scout Rifles with dbm and a 10rd mag. I think the laminate stock on the compact is the culprit, as it appears beefier than the Scout's laminate stock.

Wanting to get into a lighter stock, what options might work (given the short bbl on the compact). Boyds featherweight ? McMillan ? Where to buy ?

You can lighten a laminate quite a bit by boring some holes in the buttstock ( make sure the holes are straight) and by milling material from the forend. It's cheaper than a new stock and not real hard to do.

I have a Ruger Frontier 358 Win. and it wore a laminated stock whick was ok except the length of pull was way too short for me , so rather than mess with it I picked up a Ruger synthetic stock for it which was a perfect fit and I think it dropped about 1/2 to 3/4 of a pound.
It does look a bit strange because the stock came off a longer barreled rifle than my stubby 16 1/2 " gun, but I'll live with it cause it fits me better.
