Man mauled by grizzly kills bear, lives to tell tale

A man from B.C.'s Interior not only survived being mauled by a grizzly — he killed the bear as well.

John Shorter, 38, was hiking near Dease Lake in Northern B.C. Tuesday when he said he smelled a bear in the area.

"I heard a woofing sound, turned, seen a grizz coming at me. I managed to get my rifle up and get one round into the chest.… At that point he got on top of me, obviously, and took me down," Shorter said. "He proceeded to try to maul me in the back of the scalp and on the neck, and I protected my neck with my hands. They got fairly chewed up."

The bear was biting at his hands, which were covering his neck, so he dropped his rifle. He scrambled to get it back, eventually putting some distance between himself and the bear.

He shot the animal a second time, this time killing it.

"You just put yourself in overdrive and try and not get yourself killed," Shorter said. "It's an amazing amount of adrenaline going through yourself.… You get lots of thoughts going through your mind but you think about, obviously, your family and it's worth living, so fight."

After killing the bear, Shorter picked up his rifle and staggered back to his vehicle.

"I got back in my pickup, grabbed a drink of water, got my thoughts straight. I noticed my shoulder was dislocated. I managed to pop it in myself and thought I'd better go and get some help," Shorter said.

He drove to the nearby community of Iskut for medical treatment.

Shorter escaped the attack with what he called minor injuries. He received 40 stitches, and suffered a broken hand and multiple puncture wounds.

"You know, if you're in that situation, all you can do is fight for all you got. I mean, I don't think I'm any different from anyone else," he said.

Shorter is still recovering at his home in Smithers. Conservation officials continue to investigate the attack.

reposted from the articles section, PLEASEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE lets not debate spray Vs Firearm on this one, the GUN WON! as well no news on why the bear attacked but I would bet money on it seeing he SMELT the bear that there is a real chance it had a kill nearby and had been rolling in it

That would have sucked.... I have seen many large grizzes up there that had no fear of humans. There has to be something done up there Ie. Open season...

So where are all the guys who always post on the "bear defence" threads who claim to be able to get off 3 or 4 aimed shots at a charging grizzly?? :stirthepot2:

John Shorter's experience is pretty typical in he was lucky to get off a single snap shot before the animal was on him and in truth he is fortunate to be able to tell his story.

Another incident already, might be a busy year. We have grizzlies all over the place here, there was the grizzly attack and last week a friend had 8 grizzlies in his yard one morning (2 family units and one lone boar...some of them chasing his horses)

Keeping with Bone Collector's wish wrt spray vs guns I am not debating either but I wonder if some of the experts will try to twist the information to say that the gun failed as a defensive tool because it didn't kill the bear outright.

Glad to hear he survived with just minor injuries. He did a lot of things right; carried a rifle, was on alert when he smelled a bear in the area, and prepared himself by chambering a round before he was charged. Those all are large factors to him being around today.
Cheers

Anyone who thinks there's such a thing as a 'guaranteed' defensive tool against a griz needs to be slathered in puppy chow and fed to a pack of rabid poodles.

Unfortunately many of the published studies hyping bearspray and against firearms have been 'a little biased' IMO.

Cheers

Well even the vast majority of them don't say it works 100 percent of the time.

No matter who you are or what you do, sometimes the bear gets it right.

Yep sometimes Murphy wins no matter what you do :)
I'm not ranting but I get a little touchy when I keep seeing 'experts' and other agencies/organizations touting bear spray as the best choice and 'more effective than a firearm'; when they clearly have an agenda against firearms. Both tools have their strenghts and weaknesses, and I prefer when people are made aware of both and allowed to make thier own choice.
OK I'll keep quiet now.
Cheers

My feeling is that anyone in the bush should have at least 2 means of active defense against bears with them at all times. What those two means are depend on your circumstances. One should also be employing passive methods to avoid the confrontation also.

303 - we are not going to turn this into another 'pepper spray vs guns' debate. Your comments were deleted. I'm sure you didn't intend to be 'trolling' but that's exactly what you were doing in practical terms. Lets not hijack the thread, there's a perfectly good thread on the subject already on the go here :
