I'm not sure where to post something like this (I'm a little overwhelmed by the whole thing) but over the last couple of days, I've been thinking about getting my first gun. This one looks good, but I'm not sure what I should be thinking about. I probably wouldn't have any specific use for it other than getting use to guns...whatcha think?

Looks nice, but by Canadian standards, I believe its a prohibited firearm that requires a special licence to own. Looks nice enough and cheap too!

If its your first gun that shorter barrel may affect accuracy somewhat and may be a slight knock to your confidence. 9mm would be a great low recoil caliber to get into the sport with though, and something lighter like that may appeal to you as well. As mentioned it would be prohib here in Canada, but I see your from Virginia... i have no idea about the laws down there, but you may want to double check just to make sure

Barrel length is 3 inches. It's a prohib. You need to find that gun (if you're sticking with that one) with a >4inch barrel.
If this is your first gun you might want to reconsider. You might end up with a flinch.
Good luck.:)

edit-sorry, just saw you're in the States, so barrel might not be a problem.

Your link doesn't seem to be working, all I got was "Bad Request" what
ever that means. But don't fret it, posting pictures on this site is part science
and part Alchemy (well mostly Alchemy really). :D I lost most of my hair the
first time I tried it.
As you're composing a post you will notice a selection of composition option
icons above the text entry area. Choose the yellow one with a little mountain
in it (it's about fifth from the right). When you click on that a data entry form
will appear asking for a link. You enter the HTML link to the photo (you know
the "http://......."), then click "OK" and it will insert the appropriate HTML
code in your post. Sometimes getting the ""HTML link" part right is a little
tricky. So I use the "Preview Post" button a lot (it lets me know in advance
how badly I messed things up). :D

OK, you got it working, please disregard my previous ramblings.

As mentioned the kel-tec PF9 is a defensive pistol meant for CCW, its small and has a snappy recoil. Its not meant for casual plinking and target shooting, there are many other brands that would be suitable for target practice and plinking ie CZ, glock, Beretta, Sig Sauer, to name but a few

I think I'm going to rent a gun at the range in a few days to try out different ones. I guess I'm thinking of what caliber I want first. I'm really thinking about using it for range use first. I've shot before, but it was always what was handed to me and I had no clue as to the different features, etc. Any thoughts about a revolver?

smith and wesson made very good revolvers.you will find the trigger pull on
smith's are the best.i've got a 586-2 357 magnum.you can shoot .38 spl. or 357 mag. in it.
you could get one in 4" without the prohib. status we have here.

for a semi pistol i would suggest a s&w m&p 9mm.(can change back of grip for diff. hand sizes)
or a sig-sauer p226 9mm,maybe even a glock 17.
being in virginia goto some gun shows and look around.you might find something that catches your eye...

Renting guns to try them is the absolute best way to go . I have done this and it was far more helpful then any googling or internet information I could ever get. Don't be shy and try as many thins as you can. Post up what the outcome is. Welcome to the board!!!!!!!

Might I suggest something in a .22 LR. They are an inexpensive way to build up
your shooting skills and they are just an all round blast to shoot.:D Down south
there you have such a wide selection to choose from that I am frankly quite
envious. Semi-Auto or revolver, you could probably get one of each for the same
price of one of the other calibers. You might want to look at the S&W Model 18 K22
(Combat Masterpiece) 4 inch, it's absolutely gorgeous. I have to wear a bib every
time I look at the pictures. But it is a little pricey.
Good luck

YES! That is EXACTLY the kind of stuff I need to hear. I'm sure there are plenty of posts here asking about "first gun", so I really appreciate the feed back. I looked up the S&W model 18, but I don't know what the k22 means. What I really need to know is do I need a revolver or a pistol?
