Request: lightweight 'survival rifle'.

Hypothetically, could one take a bolt action .22 LR with a 5 shot magazine, and cut the barrel down to 12".Have it fitted with a ghost ring style sight and folding stock? Would shortening the barrel below 18" be illegal?

In Canada the lawmakers have decided that we can only have 12" barrels not make them......

In other words you can have that 12 inch barrel, but not that on....:bangHead:

The thompson contender would be my choice, im not sure on your laws but it breaks in half, 10 " 12" 14" 16" 21" 23" barrels are avalible(many with iron sights) in both center and rim fire, you could have a .223 barrel with a .22lr chamber insert(or 30/30 with a .32 S&W chamber insert) and save the weight of lugging 2 barrels around. choate makes a folding stock. it is a more expensive option but shopping around and buying secondhand can save some money. you end up with a quality firearm, that can fill several roles not just survival/backpacking.

All we need are the drawings or a legal way to get them a sample.

Any good draftsmen want to r/e it?

I own one of these. Handy little .22 carbine. :)

I'm putting together my version of the ultimate survival rifle. Its based on a TC G2 Contender, a 14" 22lr barrel, Skinner Sights, and a Choate stock adapter that basically is a pistol grip with an AR buffer tube installed (which can hold stuff inside) and an ACE buttplate. Should be about 27" OAL, about 4lbs, and no plastic junk. The nice thing is I can choose to carry a centerfire barrel or even a 45/410 to cover all possible needs.

I have one in my safe, I don't need pics/specs, i need drawings to machine from, tolerances, etc, etc. :)

I'm not big on a single shot break action .22LR only for a survival gun. I would prefer the M6.

...
I'd buy a Marlin Pappoose if I could find one...

I see it (70PSS) on Wholesale's website. Now whether they have any in stock...

anyone look at the norinco JW15A trapper?

It has a overall leangth of 30 inches, plenty of room in the rear stock to store a full box of .22 ammo, matches snare wire, a knife, space blanket, sewing kit, fishing kit and other servival stuff.
If you realy wanted to you could cut the stock down further so the rifle was only 26 inches ( still NR) still have space for ammo (have to be in a bag instead of the box) most of the same servival stuff, and it would be shorter then the average ruck frame. As is it only sticks a bit beyond the top of my 64 ruck.

you just grab the manual here with pictures of all the parts and go into google sketch up and measure all the parts so ratios and measurements are all close...
And then you hope the chinese test gun before they sell it to us.

thats what i may buy if a takedown break-action with decent sights doesnt become a reality. still, itll need aftermarket sights and a shortened LOP.

couldnt the backpacker action be used as a base? hell, id settle for different cal barrels for the backpacker.

22 is the dunest survival round for protection.
the irony in this post is absolutely staggering :D
