Request: lightweight 'survival rifle'.

Is the TC G2 really that big? I really wouldn't know I have seen too many of them. Or is it just the factory barrel lengths that makes it BIG?

This.......

Cheap and can kill things get to close with 5 rounds !!!!

I have a papoose I do like it but it has a lot of small parts inside. I am surprised that no one really makes a simple single shot 22lr take down anymore. I would love to see a light hinge action, maybe even full folding as well as take down abilities. I skimmed the whole thread and I don't think anyone mentioned the Pak rifle. It looks pretty cool, not a hinge action though.

There is no GUN to be a substitute for a girl!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Turn of your TV and go out!
You will definitely find your ultimate surviving GUN.

I'd use a short barrel lever rifle in a pistol cartridge, with 2 types of loads. Full power for big game and mean bears, and real low power for grouse and bunnies.

A Mares leg with a full stock might be ideal:)

Currently the M6 Scout is the only factory rifle that fits this niche, and they are rare/expensive as hell, and do have some inherent issues. Several rifles/shotguns targeted towards the 'survival' crowd are available on the market but, IMHO, many have major drawbacks such as a proliferation of plastic parts, flimsy sights, poor actions, etc.

IMHO for a 'survival' gun the hinge-action is ideal. it is rugged, totally reliable, inherently a takedown action, and is extremely compact: a 14" barreled hinge action would be shorter/lighter than a 10" barreled 10/22.

a sight combo similar to the XS sights rail/ghost ring combo is not offered on any .22LRs, and would be ideal for a gun like this. those who prefer can mount a compact scope or a reflex sight, and due to the hinge-action design the sights/optics would retain zero even after takedown/reassembly, and not suffer from any receiver:barrel play issues like those plaguing shotguns, 10/22s, etc.

the barrel length/stock LOP could be tailored to come in at just over the min. OAL for non-restricted. it would result in a bombproof, compact and accurate 'survival' rifle platform, and also be ideal as a plinker and youth rifle.

i made the concept using a .22 from the Rossi Trifecta package, with a shortened stock LOP and barrel. the sights are XS sights ghost rings. both of these items are easily acquirable if a 'reference' is needed for the design.

just putting this out there as this is my idea of the perfect backpacking/survival rifle, and you can put me down to preorder two of them if you can build them under $400, and im sure they would be very popular with the backpacking crowd. down the road, a short 20ga barrel could also be offered to round out the kit. .22 Hornet could also be a possibility, as could pistol calibers such as .44 mag.

i haven't read the whole thread yet , so i don't know if anyone has mentioned this yet .... BUT ....

a rossi ranch hand with a slightly shortened full stock is possibly what your looking for

holds 6 rounds , and is chambered in several calibers including 44 mag , and 45 colt and weighs under 5 pounds

I read these posts about survival, and I am of the opinion that one rifle will not do the full scope.. if you are hunting to feed yourself, and there is small game around, at 22 is best as the ammo is cheapest, and you can carry the most of it. If you are looking to survive in a slightly more hostile environment, or take responsibility for others, like your family in an area where you might have to shoot a bear or some other angry critter, I would say you need a second rifle.. my choice for the second one is a jungle carbine. OK it is heavy and long, but there are 10 in the clip, and even with factory loads, nothing in north america should get past ten of those. And they are tough and reliable, maybe toughest and most reliable. I did not read the whole thread, but that is my take on the question.

You give me a 22 rifle like this that weighs around 4 pounds and can take a 20 guage barrel or even has a 20 guage barrel on it, and I will buy one for sure. To me the 4 10 is not enough. 22 is awesome for packing and 20 guage with a brenneke or challenger slug is good defense.

I have a survival rifle. The Keltec SU16. 4.5 lbs unloaded, folds in half, non restricted, scope mounts molded into the receiver, .223 with the right ammo can stop plenty...drop a moose with the proper shot placement. Get yourself 2 LAR mags at 10 rounds each and you're set. Not sure why a survival rifle needs to be 22LR but .223 means business. 1500 rounds through mine so far, not one failure to fire...not one.

I love this gun, it goes everywhere with me. Just my two cents worth...

If its for backpacking you have to take into account the weight of the ammo/mags too ,some of these solutions would be prohibitive due to that! 2 -12 guage shell equals 50 .22,,,approximately!

Frankly, with few mods, the old Savage 24C would be ideal. .22LR over 20 ga cylinder bore. Takedown in 2 seconds, room for ammo in the butt. Broken down, the longest part (the barrel) is under 23".

The 24C camper is perfect (if you can find them) .22LR, birdshot, buckshot, slugs, you got everything covered from small game to furry scratchy things.

Savage 24s are heavy as hell (8lbs unloaded, unscoped), very bulky, and have horrible sights. i owned a 24F in .223/12ga and i absolutely loathed carrying it.

with all due respect, those suggesting guns like the Savage 24 and SKS have entirely missed the point of this thread. there are many guns available at that size/weight that can be carried in the bush. there is no lightweight, accurate, robust takedown .22LR platform that can be packed unobtrusively in a backpack. the AR-7 and Papoose are as close as it comes but both leave something to be desired.

as for the 'survival rifle' part - perhaps 'backpacking rifle' would have been a more appropriate name. the M6 scout is dubbed a 'survival rifle', however - and this would fill the same niche.

again the TC Contender is a big, expensive gun. i would not spend $1000 on a gun, then $400 on another barrel, $200+ to have some sights smithed on, and then start taking a hacksaw to the stock. thats not really a realistic scenario.
what i would much rather do is buy a $300-400 gun from CanAm, which i dont have to feel bad about beating the sh*t out of.

Why not the TC Hot Shot $250 for a stainless model. 3 lbs 30 inches, Peep sights.

Actually there is. I have been aware of this fellow in the midwest making something like what you are talking about for a few years now.

It is not all steel yet again there is no polymers in it's construction as far as I know. . .

I guess the action is identical to the old Hammond Bulldog .44 rimfire action. The Garcia - Rossi .22/410 had a similar swivelling action.

now we are getting somewhere :D
i had no idea these existed.

who sells them in Canada? do they take down?

Not sure on the takedown, i sort of doubt they engineered the Contender mechanism into it at that price point. If not, I'd expect you could work with popping the buttstck off, it's likely a single screw and you can get one made up with a wingnut sort of thing.

just called LeBaron.
#%@$ those people, seriously. what on earth is their problem? i call and am all like hello, happy easter, etc and i get the typical sour, rude, snippy woman.
naturally, the item is out of stock.

ordered one from WSS. its apparently a 19" barrel and an 11.5" LOP with a 1" stock spacer that increases the LOP to 12.5". im reading conflicting reports as to whether or not the spacer is included with the rifle or needs to be ordered separately.

all reviews ive read have been extremely positive except for THIS ONE. of course you never know which to believe, perhaps that guy is using sh*tty ammo? i cant believe that a company with a rep like TC would release a break-action .22LR that FTFs so often. regardless when i receive it, i will post a thorough review. was $265 out the door from WSS with shipping/tax included for the Blued model, the stainless is on backorder.
