resizing .308 to .243

a friend gave me a bunch of .308, and I thought I could turn them into .243. When I ran one through the die, I see a small ring on the shoulder. I cannot feel it, but I can see it. I'm thinking its a "weak point".
I know the .243 is a necked down .308, but what is the correct way?

When you neck down, the brass grows a bit.

sorry for the low light condition, but can you see the ring on the left case? I cannot feel it with my finger or a finger nail, its just a visible mark.

That mark or "ring" is where the shoulder of the 308 case ended.
It will do no harm and will almost disappear after 3-4 firings.

Make darn sure that the case neck is not too thick. If it is, there could be a dangerous situation.

That won't be an issue going from 7.6mm to 6mm as it isn't enough of a step down and most factory chambers are fairly sloppy so there is lots of room to expand.

I have seen neck thickness problems with necked down military brass 7.62 down to .243.

As someone ahead of me stated be very careful. My experience over the years is that most times the neck will end up being to thick. You can use a reamer that will go in your case trimer that will cut the necks down from the inside out. They are not to expensive and they are very easy to use and they work well.

My experience on this resizing is that the neck material will be too thick.
I use an outside neck reamer that is attached to a Forster neck trimmer.

ok, thanks guys. I'll just keep the .308 as what they are. I can afford brass.
