Hey guys I am having an issue and need some help. I just picked all my reloading equipment last week and wanted to start today. I have cleaned the brass and wanted to start resizing it. The problem seems to be with my full length resizing die. I followed the instructions, screwing the die in till it touches the shell holder. Then turning it 1/4 more and locking the lock ring. But when I go to resize it the brass will not go flush into the die. There is about 3/8 of an inch of brass still showing and the die will not remove the old primer. I have tryed adjusting the die about 4 times and it stops at the same point everytime. Am I doing something wrong ?

Die Issues

Did you clean out the die before using it?
sometimes there may be preservative in it.
try lubing your cases a little more, or less so that they seat properly.
Your Decapper could be turned down some to punch out the primer.
Just a few thoughts.

How far out the bottom of the die is the decapping pin? I think about 3/16's or so should work. Try that, and size a few cases....then try to chamber them in your rifle. If they chamber, you're good to go. Which dies are you using?

There just standard lee dies as far as I know they came in a set of 3. As for lube im just using the spray on stuff. The brass should be going flush with the die right ? Few questions for you guys how do I clean out the die for one. Also how do I lower the decapping pin im gessing its the thing on the top of the die ?

My dies don't touch the shellholder when sizing.....close, but there's still space. The decapping rod is easy to set but takes a little grunt. With your die in the press get a 3/4 and a 1/2 for the top. Loosen it and the rod will probably drop out the bottom. Use something to hold it in the right position and crank the top nut down.

Cleaning is easy...patch on a cleaning rod and give it a go with the decap rod out....seating die, pop off the top, use the cleaning rod and done like dinner.

What caliber are you trying to load for?
Sounds like you may be trying to FL size with your seater die.

Did you put lube on your case's?
If you have an oversize chamber it will feel tight going in. Put more lube on'em and push them in!

Hi GDavies,
Have you reloaded this brass before? If not, then look inside the case at the primer flash hole. If you see two holes rather than one in the centre, then you are dealing with Berdan style primers/brass and you cannot remove the primer with a standard die. I don't reload these since it is not worth the bother to convert the case to a Boxer style case. Here is a link with some more details on this subject if you have this problem.

While you are adjusting the expander/decapper, remove it completely and see if your cases go all the way into the die. This will eliminate the expander rod/decapper as causing the problem.
