Resonable pricing on Norwegian Krag

Those slings are rare here as well, and often found in bad condition. Somebody ought to make a good reproduction.

I’ve never seen a proper sling here either. Does anyone have a good picture with measurements of one? I know a leather worker that might be able to make a reasonable copy if he could get a decent “blueprint” to start from.

That was a rumour put out by a swedish officer back in the 1890's. On a trip to Norway he had bought a Krag and some ammo. When he tried the norwegian ammo in his swedish Mauser, they were hard to chamber. The swedish military even made investigations and found the difference of norwegian and swedish cartridges to be insignificant, even though a few swedish rifles needed a heavier push on the bolt to chamber the norwegian rounds. The norwegian cases and chambers were made towards the max of the specs, while the swedish chambers were towards the minimum. Both were within the specs of the 6,5x55 cartridge though. This difference was rectified only in 1990 when the scandinavian shooting organizations agreed on the 6,5x55 Skan chamber, which size lies between the swedish and norwegian chambers.

Anyway, I don't think that was the difference Rob was thinking about. Norwegian ammo used corrosive primers until the mid 50's. I don't know about Sweden, but I know that until the 1930's, the non corrosive primers were not considered very good (bad ignition in the cold, short shelf life etc). In 1940 when the germans disarmed norwegian units that surrendered, loads of Krags were stored in huge piles. Probably uncleaned. In the 1950's, when the norwegian army surplussed a large number of Krags, it was probably not the best of the best. I guess that's why so many Krags are found with corroded bores. Here in Norway, you'll find lot's of Krags with OK bores. Worn but not rusty.

That is incredibly interesting I was thinking it was a case of political hooplah as the two kingdoms were known to subject one another to now and then. Thank you for this personal insight.

Slings for long rifles were made from some kind of web-material. Only with leather reinforcements at the ends.

The Krag cartridge is 0,1 mm longer than a swedish Mauser case from head to shoulder. This article from 1981 (in norwegian) is about using Mauser dies to reload Krag cartridges. You just adjust the die in such a manner that you have a 0,1 mm gap at the bottom. The author, Nils Kvale, was the chief of Normas ballistic laboratory in the 1950's and 60's. Even in this article he speculates that the difference was intentional by the norwegian military, but later research found the difference to be coincidental.

I'm not able to post pictures, but I hope you can see the link.

.004" (0.1mm) is easily a tolerance error in production especially when they standardized on sizes in the 1890s when things weren't nearly as precise as today.

As I mentioned I suspect conditions is more due to how they were cared for in service. One was war used without a major rebuild program at the end of life as they switched to Mausers then M1s, the other was the main service arm until the 50s and then rebuilt and stored away for decades.

I managed to find a stock on eBay to restore a sporterized one:
