Respirator when dealing with Powder?

You get dizzy when scaling powder charges? I've never had this problem, it might be an indicator of a more serious problem :p

Seriously though, I'm not convinced there are any harmful vapours to worry about. As for the particle respirators, I haven't had any problems with the powders I use being lighter than air, so really there isn't much risk for breathing them in.

That's it - your dizziness needs to be diagnosed, and while we have many amateur lawyers on CGN, we have far fewer amateur doctors available.

We already have the "Doomsday Crowd" saying we should wear self-contained Spacesuits while casting lead bullets, we don't near to start a panic and have reloaders moving towards the same....

I'm with Onagoth on this one. See an actual Doctor. You got something going on that ain't normal, if you are getting dizzy from powder.

Chances are he'll test you for nitro sensitivity. If that comes up a non-issue, maybe have a good look at your reloading area and the ventilation.
It may not be as well ventilated as it seems.

Cheers

I can't say I physically touch powder much. Ever actually. As for the OP I would be more concerned about the stuff in the air when you are opening your tumbler or depriming.

I've gotten a reaction from spilling gunpowder on myself, (in my lap) and not noticing it for a few hours. (I'm in a wheelchair, and can't feel my junk). It actually happened a few times before I made the connection between reloading and splitting headache)

It was the typical nitro-headache, nothing to be worried about, but I wear an apron when I reload naked (it gets very, very hot in my apt in the summer), and shower after.

I'm talking about a tablespoon full of bullseye in my sweaty crotch on a hot day, not a few particles, and the headache still wasn't as bad as a single spray of nitrolingual under the tongue, but it was alot more long lasting. It lasted until about half an hour after my shower, when it then began to dissipate.

Nitro will adsorb through the skin fairly readily. I'd be VERY skeptical about fumes though. Nitroglycerine is a heavy oil, not very volatile (prone to evaporate) at all.

Blasters can also get the "nitro headache" if they handle a lot of conventional dynamite during a day.

It is absorbed through the skin but will be absorbed through the lungs even quicker.

With smokeless powder, there are also solvents that come off the powder.

Waaaay too much information.

To answer the original question... If you are concerned about inhaling powder then yes a properly fitted hepa filtered respirator is adequate protection. However if you are getting that much powder airborne you are doing something wrong and creating a fire hazard.

If your headaches are linked to the powder then it's more likely (as has been said) that you are ingesting it or absorbing it through your skin. Don't eat, drink or smoke around powder. Make sure to thouroughly wash your hands after handling powder. I would suggest seeing your doctor because it sounds unrelated to reloading to me -and- this is a web forum and probably not the best place to get medical or hygiene advice...:(

Wear all the (PPE) personal protective equipment, you feel you need.
Read all the (MSDS) material safety data sheets, you feel you must.
Just don't blow yourself up,
Then blame us.

Smoking while reloading elliminates the vapors, you get the odd -pouf- which signifies the technic is working........... <----- this is a joke, please do not attempt.

I would just wear Nitrile gloves and wash up before eating.. also wearing some protective clothing like Bobby does is also a good idea, I would stay away of the naked stuff.... just in case you drop some powder down there then some cigarette ashes, might cause a bit of a burning thing kind of like a herpes attack.

Way too much info Bobby! May I suggest not to BBQ that way either, that might be a Bratwurst of another kind you are smelling:p
I can see it now, a thread saying "Need help, pubs getting caught in press, is this normal";):p

Anyone here wear a Respirator/Mask when measuring powder out? If so, what kind is it.
Dust/Particle or Harmful vapor type? I'm leaning towards the later.

I am using and RCBS digital scale to measure out powder loads one at a time.
The room is fairly well ventilated but I am wondering if it may be a good idea to invest in some kind of Respirator to combat the dizziness.

I just wanted to repost this.

I love the smell of powder. I love the smell of pu$$y too and I'll be damned if I'll block them out. Okay does anyone else get painful hard-ons after a session of reloading? I always wanted to ask but don't want folks thinking I'm weird. Wifey lets me spend lots on this hobby and I let her buy shoes.
