Hello all I have a number 1 mark 4 that's deal seen better days, I'm trying to restore it somewhat, its a beat up rifle used for seal hunting, it was sportarozed shortened stock sights messed up, no mag, bolts OK, the stock is loose, electrical tape everywhere, I will post some pictures when I get home, just wondering if anyone could tell me a parts list I need to at least make this rifle look close to original as I can
 
It is a Maltby #4 Mk1. (I know you know that). I don't see why it couldn't be brought back. The crappy rear sight install would be hidden by the new rear hand guard.
If it was a sealing gun, I would be surprised if the bore didn't look like a sewer pipe. If it is really bad, it might not be worth it. Have fun
You need
complete rear sight
butt, forestock and top hand guards
barrel bands (3)
foresight guard, block and blade
By the way, is the gas port hole blocked? This is the hole on the left side of the chamber.
 
Thanks, and the bore is near as i can tell mint, i looked down it with a light and i was like WTH its purdy LOL
the gas port I have no idea why, I was told 300 yards they were doing head shots and ive seen them use this gun for it, i used a spotting scope, i mean my 308 i couldnt even touch the distance lol
 
That's in pretty rough shape, for $150-$200 you could get a sporter in 1000x better condition for a starting point if you want to do a restoration. Plus I think Maltby is kind of the least desirable manufacturer.
I wouldn't if it was mine.
 
A new handguard won't cover that hideous rear sight. The dovetail cut could be filled and peened over prior to refinishing and it wouldn't be as noticeable.
The butt stock looks pretty rough, but a few treatments with oven cleaner may make it prettier. The gurus frown on oven cleaner, but I still use it on wretched stocks. Unless you're very lucky, it will cost over $100 to get a replacement magazine and rear sight with the necessary bits. If the barrel is really nice, it could be worth $100 to someone and you could put it towards a sporter with a bit more life in it.
 
True, I was thinking just leave the rear dovetail alone, unless that's where the stock rear site went, over the bolt and action, was there something that went there some I saw had something I believe, and the reason I wanted to restore its anold rifle from a elder who was supposedly over in D Day with the forces, that's what I got told by a few of the rangers here and it came from them originally
 
Is that a rear sight or was it the mounting point for a claw type scope base before bubba threw away the scope and rings only to file a rough slot in the dovetail? Oh bubba!

Probably unlikely, but I have seen some pretty mysterious bubba work myself over time.

If the headspacing is okay and the bore is pristine, I don't see why you should not restore it. I would not care too much about it being a Maltby, who cares what other people think of it. Great fun to restore an LE. Thanks for posting the pics.

It's a rear sight fied way way down, and a slit sawed and filed, or just scraped in hahah
