So was able to acquire a 1974 Winchester 94/22 Magnum off a local fellow. The bluing was in pretty good shape but tiny speckling on receiver mostly and a bit on barrel. Action internals and the bore were in perfect condition. The mag tube follower had fine rust and a bit of pitting that didn't go too deep, but other than some of the deepest pitting polished out pretty good. It is a steel mag tube follower so is quite thick and will be fine. The spotting doesn't show anyway once inserted. The stock was the worst. The wood was badly dried out and the finish checking and flaking off quite bad. Only one deep ding in it and mostly some rub marks and safe kisses that steamed out pretty good once the finish was stripped. I didn't want to remove all the history of the stock so a couple of the deeper marks I left to show but it turned out to look pretty nice when I was finished.

Nice job. I have the same and have wondered about redoing the stock. It sounds like yours was similar condition with bluing mostly good, and wood finish flaking and missing especially at the butt stock. A few dings and scratches, but nothing serious. Mine was used by a trapper I know, so honest use marks, but not mistreated. After I got it, I also found a one in WinCam, and another lr version too ;)

Did you apply any stain, or is it just oiled?

Thanks guys. I keep myself occupied in the winter as a hobby refinishing old rifles. As I am on disability it keeps me from getting cabin fever lol.

I applied a coat of "Gunstock" color stain to the wood. Gives it the rich color.

I commend you sir on a beautiful job, absolutely lovely !!

There is nothing finer ,than spending a winters day in the shop messin around and being consumed with a project from start to finish ,and you obviously were very devoted to the hobby...as am I !!

I do love winter, for if nothing else but to spend time in my woodworking shop, doing what you are doing.

Excellent !
