try googling "duffle joint" or "duffle cut"

In WW2, US GIs were allowed to bring back to the USA articles that they obtained legally, including captured rifles and other war trophies. The only stipulation being that the article had to fit in their regulation duffle bag. Since some of the "bring back" rifles had stocks that were too long to fit in the bag, the stock was cut under a barrel band so it would fit. Hence the term "duffle cut"

I've recently read some good how-to articles on this subject, but I can't remember where, you could look on the gunsmithing forum (called "The Workbench") at Gunboards.com.
