So, awhile back I purchased a sporterized K98 off the board from a very good member. I took the chance and bonused out considering what I paid.

I can get more details, but this is what I have:

An older sporter, mot likely done decades ago from what I can tell. Barrel was not touched, so original. All metal parts match, except the missing pieces of course. I.e the bands. Its actually matching right down to the capture screws on the Mag/triggerguard assembly.

The stock also seems to match (IIRC inside the barrel channel is stamped the matching series number).

What is my best course of action? I am thinking to just get a proper replacement stock and whatever bands etc I can find? It will be somewhat mismatched but at least "correct".

Its to bad someone cut the original matching stock down.

I will try to get pics later.

What year/code? I would try to find the "correct" stock for it based on that. Same with the bands. They would have the wrong numbers but at least the waffenamts would be right.

Alternatively, try to find a junker fore-end and splice the missing 15 or 18" to the properly inletted and patina'd existing stock. I often see large diameter drums and barrels of stocks and pieces at the gun shows. Carry the existing piece with you and start shopping. Remember there are early to late differences in the bands and foreend cap. Having a clear idea of what configuration you need will save you a lot of trouble.

If you search CGN with the term "splice" you will probably find someone's thread doing exactly this project. Ross rifles for instance are often salvaged this way.

Many dealers have a lot of stock details even get down to the same manufacturers and year matching your rifle but you may pay up to $300 bucks to do that.
