I'm not sure if this should be here or in the Gunsmithing section but I think it's worth a look for those interested in the rehabilitation of a 200 year old percussion Jaeger rifle. Lots of photos.

Very interesting article. What has always puzzled me is why the germans made wooden trigger guards; they seem awfully fragile

I've wondered the same thing - the Germans liked their elaborate wood carving, some of the antique furniture and such from the period was/is intricately carved, so one guess is that these trigger guards were designed for form over function? But I don't know
